Default Dandruff?

DD has flaky scalp. Hair stylist last month said it could be shampoo build up and talked about rinsing really well since her hair is so thick. Today she was brushing her hair in the fan and all these flakes were falling off!

She uses Head & Shoulders and only washes her hair about twice a week. A friend said she uses some kind of H&S spray. I just sent her a message asking if it was this. https://www.amazon.com/Head-Shoulder...gateway&sr=8-3

Do you have any other ideas?

Someone told me that tea tree oil can help with dandruff, so I got a shampoo that had it. Mine is Organix tea tree and mint shampoo. It's fixed my dandruff and my hair is generally healthier than it was when I was using medicated shampoos.

We used BWC tea tree shampoo and it didn't help. Will look up Oganix.

This is what comes up when I type Organix. https://www.ogxbeauty.com/shop/teatree-mint/shampoo-22/

I don't know how long she used that one, still had flakes.

I've used coal tar shampoo- I think Neutrogena. It smells horrible. But I also wash my hair with regular shampoo afterward to get rid of the smell.
I also was told that I have seborrheic dermatitis, which made my scalp itchy. I got a prescription for some liquid medicine to squeeze on the area, which definitely helped.
For hair product build up, I really like an Aveda shampoo that is designed to get rid of build up. It works really well for me.

That's the one I use. I figure what works will depend on the person, but it was life changing for me.

She could try using raw apple cider vinegar as a rinse. I know that has helped many people. It not only helps the scalp be healthy but removes build up.

It can also be a symptom of allergies so if she may have accidentally eaten one of her allergens, it might go away on its own. (Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, I think your kids have allergies?)

I use Sodium laureth sulfate/sodium lauryl ether sulfate free shampoo (Palmers Coconut Shampoo, but health food shops sells many others), plus a scalp massage every single time I shampoo. I also shampoo no more than every other day, often every 3rd time. If I wash in between I use conditioner only and don't forget the scalp massage... nice abd deep using finger tips.

Also helps to determine what causes dandruff.... can be an allergy, oily scalp causing skin to stick them flake off in bigger bits, dryness which is often smaller flakes, residue is sort of stickier flakes.

Nope, no known allergies.

Default Re: Dandruff?

I've had scalp issues for as long as I can remember. My teens were the worst (when I was using more product and didn't know about the other choices out there).

Head and Shoulders doesn't help me at all. In fact, I think it makes things worse.

I use Dermarest Medicated Shampoo plus Conditioner. It's clear, I don't think it's scented, and the active ingredient is salicylic acid, which is what I think works for me.

Not sure how conditioning it actually is. My hair is staticky if I don't use a conditioner. The only conditioner I have found so far that doesn't exacerbate my allergies/scalp issues is Glonaturals Lavender Tea Tree Balancing Conditioner (which I can't find at Vitacost now - eek!).

Along with products, I'd get her a shampoo brush to help remove flakes.

Never heard of a shampoo brush. Looking that up. (ETA: found one.)

She's been using something that I think says from the makers of Tgel and it is better. Last week her 12 year sister had a spot on her head that was red and flaky. I had her use it too.

Default Re: Dandruff?

The thing that helped me the most from tons of dandruff as a teen was learning to truly rub my scalp. A shampoo brush is an excellent way to do that without accidentally scratching your scalp wit your nails.

Autumn had this, the hairdresser said to make sure she always blow dries her hair as leaving it to dry itself can make the scalp dry (she hadn't been blow drying it), she's started doing that every time and it's made a huge difference. I also think part of it is hormones just now too, she is 12.

Oh and she said also use a shampoo that is specifically geared to balance the PH levels and has zero nasty stuff in it. We use Herbal essences white tea and mint or crimson orange.
