New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
Just found this via another thread in this forum. I think it looks promising.
The curriculum Science in the Beginning Science in the Ancient World Science in the Scientific Revolution Science in the Age of Reason https://www.bereanbuilders.com/cgi-b...&category=ELEM Dr. Wile's blog post about it http://blog.drwile.com/?p=11016 Keeping science in its proper perspective as a human invention is very important to me. Studying the history of science, not just the current scientific paradigm (that will undoubtedly change), is a great way to do that. ---------- Post added at 09:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:26 PM ---------- There are PDFs to correlate this with SotW and ToG. |

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
I bought Science in the Ancient World a few years ago. I ended up not using it (I just had too many things going on so I let science go ) but I am considering using it for next year (mainly depending on what the other mom in my co-op wants to do). I've looked through it and it seems good.

my dislike of him personally makes it hard to want to look at these but I like the way it's broken up.

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
Is your dislike of him personally possibly relevant to anyone choosing a curriculum? Meaning is there a reason to steer clear of it based on what kind of person he is?

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
I've got it in my RR basket. My younger ones just started listening to SOTW 1 and I thought this would be a nice change from what I've used prior.

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
It's on my "to do" list to research this book and decide whether to integrate it with SOTW1 next year. So interested in anyone's opinions on that!

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
I was impressed with how he handled his withdrawal from Apologia. The new owners have a vision that includes books on Christian worldview and it is heavy on "this is what Christians believe," including things like young earth, Calvinism, etc. It's very narrow and implies that if you don't believe those things you're not Christian.
My belief is that I'm raising my children to leave me, not to be me. I don't tell my kids what to think or believe and I certainly don't want homeschool books to do that, either. In general I'm leery of homeschool textbooks on worldview, for that reason. ---------- Post added at 11:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 AM ---------- Yeah, that's very irritating. |

And then shortly after that, he had a full page as his website's Home page promoting vaccines. Again, I don't care what his personal opinion is, but I didn't think he should have used his science textbook sales website for that. He may conduct himself more professionally now, but it left a bad taste in my mouth for any of his science products. |

Re: New science & history curriculum by Dr. Wile
We are 1/3 of the way through the Ancient World book. I appreciate that it is neutral as far as age of the earth. In the past we have stuck with currics that are organized by type (earth/space, chem, bio etc). I'm still not sure I like bouncing around, but I love the history involved. I think it's a good bridge for us since we will use a Great Books approach for middle/high school history/lit.
I know nothing about some of the controversy/issues mentioned in this thread, so this is just my two cents, all that other stuff aside.

I have it on my "maybe" list. It just depends on the budget when I go to order and if something else catches my eye instead. |
