Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
This is for our new upstairs, there are 3 bedrooms and a loft/hang out/game space. I keep waffling. The stairs leading up to it will be hardwood treads with white risers.
Here's a link to the project album on Facebook, in case you need to visualize the space.https://www.facebook.com/amy.waln/me...0947002&type=3

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
I think area rugs are just as dirty and dusty as carpet, so either laminate and nothing else or carpet.
We don't have allergies, so I prefer carpet for bedrooms. And plan to replace in 10 years. No shoes on carpet.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
I like carpet, too, for the coziness on the feet and for the sound dampening effect. Carpet is really improving, too- there are much better options than there used to be.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
It's such a personal preference thing! Are you planning to sell anytime soon? If not I'd just go with whatever you prefer. There are no right answers.
I hate carpet. So I would do laminate. But again that's just personal preference.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
So many factors. If you have dogs that get dirty, cats that get hair balls, kids that are allowed to bring food up there, or other situations prone to create a mess, then I'd get laminate. I prefer carpet in bedrooms. (We don't allow any food and only water in bedrooms, shoes come off at the door.) We currently have laminate in our whole house, though, but we're saving for carpet, the highest stain resistant carpet that we can find that's not treated. We bought an inexpensive area rug for the family room at Home Depot so it's comfortable to play on the floor. When we have the budget for wall to wall carpet it's going in the trash.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
what an amazing fun project! (fun, cause it's not my house all dusty, right? )
I hate carpet. We have it in our bedrooms, and if it were on the budget and wishlist, it would be gone. I want to replace it with luxury vinyl planks. Looks like wood, softer and more warm than laminate. I hate carpet though. |

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
I think that's what we have. It's almost as expensive as manufactured wood floors and it's waterproof. It looks like real wood, too.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
I guess....it depends on what your concerns are. Some folks already pointed out the cleaning issues for carpet. I feel like carpet can never be truly clean. Even if you get stains remove, there is always that nasty spongy padding underneath it, harboring dust, allergens and bacteria. I cant believe all the junk and debris that was under/inside of our carpet and pad when we pulled it up recently to replace with laminate. But its a rental so maybe that's why. Along the maintenance concerns for flooring include the tractability of laminate. We've put several scratches on the laminate floors in out apartment just doing normal stuff.
But really, for a home I was planning on living in long-term where I got to decide the flooring, there's honestly just NO WAY I could personally go with either carpet nor laminate. My objection is to the chemicals that are emitted into the home. I believe it really impacts our overall health and well being. Its known that these chemicals are emitted for years and contribute poor indoor air quality and to Sick House Syndrome. Id really look into the possibility of hardwood, bamboo or even plywood thats been stained and cut into planks. But if youre sure you only want one or the other, I guess ascetically, upkeep and feel only, Id go with laminate. The laminate in our apartment looks and feels quite nice and I dont have the same gross-out factor. |

We are doing that kind of vinyl in the bathroom. We do have a dog and 2 cats and all the other people in my family want more of both.

Re: Carpet vs. Laminate, WWYD
We have laminate downstairs and carpet upstairs. The laminate is way easier to maintain and better for DH's allergies. I wish we had it upstairs

I think both would be lovely. How exciting that you are coming to the end of the house extension!
