Re: bread maker
They are both considered maize, I believe. He doesn't react to small amounts of it in store bought foods, but I avoid it at home. He seems to be becoming more sensitive.

Re: bread maker
I didn't have any restrictions when I used a bread maker every day, a few years ago. I saved some money, not a lot. As soon as you start putting the good stuff in the bread (various nuts, seeds, flax, etc) it starts getting pricey. But buying in bulk and shopping good sales can help some.
IME, bread makers are like treadmills. People pay big money for them, use them for awhile, decide they are too much work...and then give them away or sell them for a fraction of the price. I would definitely look around if saving is your main goal. Craigslist? My mother just started mentioning it to people that I was looking for one and my aunt had one in her basement. No harm in asking friends or family if they have one lying about. The hardest part for me was using up the bread entirely before it went stale. (cutting it nearly in half right after it's done and then sealing it in tinfoil will help that problem by a day or so). We only had two adults and a preschooler in the house at the time though. No preservatives means you have to really stay on top of it or it will be stale. And then there is nothing to do but make it into toast or breadcrumbs. |

Re: bread maker
The bread I make stays good for a week in the fridge. Since it's GF, it functions better toasted anyway.

Re: bread maker
Even if you could find a used bread maker, I would be uneasy using a used machine to make gluten free bread. I don't know if you could actually get it clean enough.

Re: bread maker
That's an excellent point. I take back the advice to find a used one. Cleaning those things is a trip.

Re: bread maker
Occasionally you can find one that was never used on a yard sale. Ours came from a family member who had never unpacked it in 8 years.

Re: bread maker
I bought one for $60 that has been great. It had amazing reviews. I'm not home right now so I'll post the brand and model later.
Baking GF bread at home is much cheaper than buying it. . Grain-free bread is super expensive but it's rare to even find that in the store. GF bread is harder to slice then regular bread. I may get an electric knife. |

Re: bread maker
I tossed my bread maker in favor of a good mixer. We got a Kitchen Aide, I know you want to not heat up your oven, but the kneading process is pretty easy with the kitchen aide mixer. I like to make a few loaves at a time, and freeze.
I did like the breadmaker, but the bread disappeared rather quickly! Then appeared on my hips? |
