can shredded cheese be frozen?
So yesterday among my groceries I bought 2 packs of shredded cheese. However after I put everything away one of the package was missing. I checked the car etc.. couldn't find it. I figured it somehow got left behind....
Anyways this evening I was re arranging the stuff in my freezer and sure enough guess what I pulled out. It is a Kroger brand package of milld cheddar shredded cheese. So anyways is this stuff going to be okay? Like can I just move it to the fridge to thaw and use as normal.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
I know you can freeze cheese you've grated yourself, so I don't see why pre packaged stuff should be a problem

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
yea this is just like block cheese but shredded. Not like anti caking stuff added. So can I just stick it in the fridge and go on with life? I wont use this package all at once it will be used little by little over the next few weeks.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
Cheese can do weird things when frozen, but I can't remember which types freeze better/worse than others.
I would think it'd be fine. Worse case scenario it might mush together a bit, then I would just use it as melted cheese on something and it wouldn't matter. Let us know how it turns out.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
We freeze cheese all the time. It's a block of cheese? It may get crumbly when you thaw and try to cut it, but definitely usable.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
Shredded cheese freezes really well. You can actually use it straight from frozen.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
I keep all my cheese in the freezer because we don't use a ton so i'm always afraid to lose it to mold. In fact, I smack in on the counter to get a little out at a time when using for omelets.
If I buy a block and I know I will shred it, I shred it first. If I purchase shredded, I just throw the bag in the freezer. Take it out when I need it, use what I need and return to the freezer

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
I freeze shredded cheese all the time! Especially when there's a sale on cheese and I know we won't use it all soon. Thaws out just fine too.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
thanks mine has thawed out fine you can't tell it was ever frozen. Of course now I wonder if maybe I should jsut put it back in the freezer. WHen I thought it was missing I bought another package so now I have two fairly large bags. We do use cheese often but not THAT often, maybe I should stick the extra in the freezer till we need it??

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
Sure, freeze it! Keeps it from going moldy.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
I'd freeze the other bag now.
Sometimes I think it can be a little moister after it thaws, so next time you might only thaw what you need for a few days at a time just to make sure the thawed package doesn't mold, or as someone said, just use it frozen if you're going to melt it anyway. It's usually loose enough to break free pieces of it without thawing the whole package.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
I froze the extra. They are 1lb bags (4 cups) which we typically use up in about 2-3 weeks or so.

Re: can shredded cheese be frozen?
Bags of shredded cheese in my freezer is a standard pantry thing. I can make fresh mac and cheese, quesadillas etc at a moment's notice. I do find that finely shredded mozzerella tends to freeze into one solid clump, but a few wacks with my meat tenderizer and it is good to go. I do not defrost it before using, usually. I guess the cheddar for tacos is the exception b/c I'm not cooking it into anything.
