So you’re making hamburgers
For a family of 5 adults. How much ground meat do you buy?
Let’s just say there is a disagreement in my house about this. Help me see which of us is reasonable. |

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
It depends on the size of the burgers. I would say minimum 3 pounds. More of you want bigger burgers. More if most of the adults are men.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I use a 1:1 ratio of ground meat to ground mushrooms (one package of sliced baby bella mushrooms - one lb of meat). For 5 people I'd say 2 lbs of meat so there is enough for leftovers (so 1 lb plus the mushrooms if everyone was just having a single hamburger at the meal).

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
One of my sons and I are usually the only burger eaters and he would need at least a half pound and me usually 1/4. But would depend totally on size of adult and appetite and if you used any fillers in them like the mushrooms mentioned

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
Our rule of thumb is 1/2 lb per person (roughly 2 patties each).

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
We're low carb/high fat, so I'd buy 80/20 ground beef (shrinkage). And I'd buy at least three pounds - maybe four if I'm cooking them earlier in the day.
When I make a dish with ground beef as part of the dish, it usually takes two pounds to feed us all. So, when meat is the main event I need at least three pounds.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
If it is five adults/teens I would say 2 or 3lbs. We are 4 and when the kids were little we were fine with 1lb, but now that they are teens we need at least 1 and a 1/2lbs sometimes 2. We usually use lean ground beef so not much shrinkage.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I would say an absolute minimum is 1.5 lb, I would use that to make 6 paties. If there were teenage boys or people who had been doing physical activity I would by 2 to 2.5 lb
