Best Cleaning Tips That I Learnt This Week
There's a couple of great cleaning tips that I've learnt this week.
The first trick was quite a simple one and that's just using some rubber gloves to clean up pet hair. You just wet the gloves a bit and wipe up the hair. The hair gets sucked up really easily. Its very simple but very effective. Sometimes the hoover just doesn't do the job although we do need a new one to be fair. The other trick I've learnt is how to clean-up dirty pillows. I've never liked how dirty the pillows get in our house and its always nice to put on a fresh cover and hide the discolouration, mainly caused by my sweaty partner of course. We tend to replace them over time but you should really just wash them, at least a couple of times a year apparently. I didn't know that and we've definitely not been cleaning ours every 6 months. Basically, there is no reason why you can't stick them in the washing machine so we should wash them more often. I've found a good cleaning solution that you can make yourself. You use some hot water and mix with 1 cup of laundry detergent, 1 cup of powdered dishwasher detergent, 1 cup of bleach, half a cup of borax. It honestly works really well and my pillows have come out lovely and clean. I was sceptical but its definitely worth doing. |

Re: Best Cleaning Tips That I Learnt This Week
Thanks for those tips! We have 2 dogs who are indoors a lot so hair can be a problem and I can't vacuum/mop every day so the gloves is a great idea
I air our pillows in the sun but never knew they could be washed. Will have to try it and if it ruins a pillow, well I can always buy a new one. Great ideas....keep them coming

Thanks for the tip! Do you put that mixture in the washing machine or let it soak somewhere?

Re: Best Cleaning Tips That I Learnt This Week
Cool! No pets here but 2 daughters with long hair so our house is hair invaded enough. Especially the bathroom, despite regular clean up. I will try that trick.
As for the pillows, I have put them in the wash, and I find that it gets them all bunched up and uneven. Which drives me insane. So I've resorted to just replacing them when needed. I'll be curious if there is a trick to wash them without these happening?

I've read that drying pillows with a tennis ball can keep them fluffed, but I've never actually tried it.

Re: Best Cleaning Tips That I Learnt This Week
I think it depends on the type of pillow. I have some pillows with loose fluff that do fine in the washer and fluff up after drying. The cheaper pillows I have are basically many layers of batting folded over and over. Those always get bunched up, even with the two sets of dryer balls I keep in the dryer. They always come out super flat after washing. Kids don't seem to mind, but I like fluffy pillows that I can adjust the filling to my needs.

Just a warning. We had one of our feather pillows explode in the washer. Now granted this pillow was probably older than me. I wash our pillows all the time and dry them with dryer balls. I would not recommend trying to dry pillows with out some thin I. With them to bounce a round.
