I never thought of it in relation to food before. I ate a typical, but everything-made-from-scratch, SAD diet before. Now we're like...whole foods (grassfed meat, lots of veggies and fruit, honey, maple syrup, coconut) and almost no grain except corn.
I was told the "fuzz" was a detox reaction to yeast die off when I researched. I'm not sure what to think as ds had it until we quit GAPs

One of the things many do on GAPS that isn't recommended in the Cure Tooth Decay book is heavy nut consumption. Actually for active decay he says no nuts and seeds at all is best. IIUC avoiding PUFAs is a big deal in the metabolic camp and that would eliminate nuts? Couldn't that make a big difference?

Discolored teeth is way different that active decay. Discoloration is known to happen with detox.

Possibly but not for us because we don't eat more nuts now than while on GAPS. We don't avoid PUFA's. I am making GAPs pecan bark tonight as soon as DH gets home from the grocery store -- I still use coconut flour and nut meals and GAPs recipes for pancakes. I just eat starches I have no clue why our teeth changed.

That could be a contributor. I bought Rami's book in, let me think, 2007. I started implementing it slowly because I was pregnant. I was got up to about 90% compliance and stayed that way for about 7ish months. It was awhile ago, I don't remember exactly. I didn't see improvement, not even a little. I attributed it to not being 100%. My teeth did get better when I went back to a WAPF/Maker's Diet way of eating but I also added in Mercola's multi-vitamin & mineral at the same time. Although I was only taking 1 tablet per day when I was supposed to be taking 4 (I didn't read the directions. )

We did eat more nuts than previously while on GAPS but no seeds. And I sprouted my almonds. When we were on GAPS, my ds did develop decay. Several cavities. None of us had discoloration, just loss of color. Our teeth went from white to semi-transparent and they became easily stained if we ate something like balsalmic vinegar, wine, or beets. We currently consume PUFAs occasionally. Guacamole is just too delicious, as is mayonnaise, to avoid entirely. We use nuts in recipes if we feel like it. And I love to fry my GF bread in bacon grease. So, basically, we consume PUFAs if it's a really delicious food that we just want. But I don't try to find ways to get more avocados in our diet or anything. And we consume saturated fats like crazy, same as always.

If being grain free/paleo/GAPS helps your teeth, . It definitely didn't in our case. I took me a whole year to piece all of it together because while we were on GAPS my life and brain was so consumed with all the cooking, food prep, reading, trying to minimize the repercussions of all the "detox symptoms" and micromanaging our social lives (because social things involve food!) that I wasn't seeing the whole picture.

I didn't notice any before/after changes with GAPS as far as the appearance of our teeth. They look pretty much the same.

My teeth became transparent on early gaps. It's a sign of metal toxicity, iirc. Brushing with clay cleared it up immediately.

The kids teeth are amazing doing gaps. Bright, shiny white, and no progression of decay at all. They stick to the tooth decay diet pretty strictly though.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I have recently concluded (this weekend ) that my 3 kids have dh's teeth and I have my teeth My teeth survived a horrible diet plus bulimia without HORRIBLE decay I have some decay but nothing excessive and nothing in the past decade since eating a more whole foods based diet. My dh has had thousands of dollars of dental work throughout his life - over $10K just since we've been married .

Add my dh's teeth + chemo and our son has alot of issues

This is so very interesting to me.
Since we started grain-free (or even the process with just gluten free) and low sugar. I feel like my breath has gotten worse, my teeth feel dirty/fuzzy a lot and seldom clean and they sometimes feel sort-of tingly in an unpleasant sort of way. I've never had teeth problems before, no cavities nothing. Oh, I've also developed a recurring sore spot on my gums that keeps coming back every month or two for a few days. I've started drinking raw milk now that I'm pregnant in hopes that it will help. I'm really unsure what to make of it all.

I would participate in this. Been following Matt's "protocol" for almost a year now. I haven't seen the weight management forum. Maybe it's an opt in? I will go look. But if there's a new thread being started, count me in!

I was wondering if it was opt in too. I haven't seen it. A thread in NH2 might be more fitting for me, personally.

Yes, weight management is an opt-in forum.

I'll start one in NH2 since there is interest.

that's weird did you maybe replace the grains with other things like more legumes. or replace the sugar with more non organic fruits?

It would've been weird to me, too, if I hadn't experienced something similar.

Die off and/or detox should only last a few days, a few weeks if you're in really bad shape. Then rebuilding and healing should be taking place simultaneously. Detox should continue in the background, pretty much unnoticed. If you're continuing to experience negative symptoms, something's not right, IMO, and you should try to figure that out ASAP. (I really wish that I had done that sooner, rather than religiously sticking to an idea.)

No legumes, the soaking is beyond my time capabilities right now and until recently I was only allowing myself and the kids one piece of fruit a day at breakie in conjunction with eggs and bacon/sausage. Right now we are doing slightly more fruit but I try to keep it paired with protien like yogurt, cheese, nut butter, etc...

I just keep reading and researching on-line. I want to start adding the gluten free seeds like buck wheat and such back in as well. I will have to keep the grains eliminated though because my whole family (MIL, dh, kids) are celiac/gluten sensitive and we are seeing sensitivities to the non-traditionally gluten grains as well (ex. = corn and rice) and I've a nursing toddler and a babe on the way that I don't wish to cross contaminate
