Default Novel suggestions for middle school American History

I'm teaching History through Literature next year at co-op. It's a middle-school level class and I need to put together our reading list. The time period we're covering is American History.

Any suggestions?

Johnny Tremain

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch

Some poetry might be good. Longfellow. I'm sure there are other good choices but he comes to mind.

Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin might be too difficult depending on the students. Maybe excerpts.

What about things like Louisa May Alcott's books (Little Women, etc), and Mark Twain's books, like Tom Sawyer? while not written as history, they tell about life in their respective time periods.

Check the Sonlight curriculum list for that level (I'm blanking on what number it is but it's the equivalent of 8th grade, all American History) - I used that list when I was homeschooling my sister 2 years ago and there were tons of excellent books on it - I still have most of them if you're looking for copies!

Okay, here's what I'm working with so far:

Witch of Blackbird Pond
Sign of the Beaver
Johnny Tremain
Indian Captive
Call of the Wild
To Kill a Mockingbird

Other possibilities:
Elijah of Buxton
Bud, not Buddy

I think I definitely need some novels reflecting 19th century America.
