Fraternities or sororities?
Ever been in one? Can they be positive?
They get a bad rap on movies and the news for the hazing and the drinking. My oldest wants to join one. I've been praying that he would not (always God's will above mine of course). Have told ds to pray about and think about it. And to know when to walk away.

Re: Fraternities or sororities?
It was in my sorority that I came to know Jesus. We had a weekly Bible study with someone from what is now Cru, and we did lots of Campus crusade (cru) greek events.
I do think they are too expensive for what you get.

Re: Fraternities or sororities?
The ones focused on volunteer work are amazing!
The academic ones can be amazing, too. The social ones are usually not a good idea. ---------- Post added at 08:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:16 PM ---------- Dh's counsin was very involved in this one. She met her husband in it. They are both amazing people. https://apo.org/ |

Re: Fraternities or sororities?
Thank you all, good to know!
The joining fee, if he gets in , is $475! He'll pay of course, not us. He did say it was about life and work connections and that they do volunteer work. I just worry so much about the hazing and partying. Can't do that though, must just keep giving him over to God.

A lot of my coworkers joined for the same reason. And they are very active with their fraternity brothers and sorority sisters even now as adults! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Fraternities or sororities?
I was in a social sorority in college, and it was a very positive experience.
You bond quickly and closely with your brothers or sisters because you spend so much time together. Each one is focused on their own philanthropy and participate in lots of events on campus that keep members busy and fulfilled. There definitely isn't time to be bored, which felt comfortable for me and eased the transition between high school with lots of extra curriculars and college. At my college, as is probably true at most, there was a GPA minimum and mandatory tutoring if your grades slipped. Generally at any school each fraternity and sorority will have its own reputation. It's important to know the reputations of each one to make a good choice. There are on-campus ministries that specifically reach out to the Greek community, and I knew lots of people who were saved through their Greek connections. My sorority was probably about 1/3 strong believers, 1/3 wild party girls, and 1/3 in-between types. It can be tough, though, for students who aren't really strong in their faith already. I know a handful of people who were believers but really struggled and went through some dark years in college. But it isn't just Greeks who party, so that may have happened anyway.
