Re: kombucha 101 thread!
We use beer type bottles from Ikea. I have so many, I honestly don't know what I was thinking. LOL I use at most 4 in a month - 2 for Kombucha, 2 for water kefir. I keep our milk kefir in mason-type jars.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
So why do you get better fizz from a beer bottle, if your mason jars are air tight too???....I don't get it!!!!!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I am thinking my mason type jars do not seal as well, as I still hear the air escaping from my canning jars. The others have snap close lids with a rubber seal. Maybe the pressure builds and isn't "burping" on it's own?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Well, I guess I'll stick w/ my system then and forgo the beer bottles, since my kids really hate any fizz. I can barely get them to drink it as is!
Any tips on that, besides mixing it w/ juice? My littlest won't even drink juice right now - he only wants water and breastmilk!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Honestly, I dunno. Mine think it's better than soda and beg for it and kefir.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Mason jars are not air tight unless you are canning and seal them. Mine are constantly leaking stuff out, and you can hear things going pshhhshhhshh sometimes I asked for the picklit jars for Christmas. I saw a blog entry from someone who microscoped the bacteria pictures, and there was WAY more bacteria from air tight containers than mason jars.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Probably just for food unless someone feels like blessing me with a whole bunch of them But you know I will at least try it once to see how much fizz I can get going!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Did the mason jars. DH was not going to sanitzie the beer bottles for me this time and I am impatient and lazy.
So mason jars this time, and beer bottles next time I think! Also, I was going to peel scoby to do two jars, but he wouldn't peel very nicely. I cut him in half. This will be all right, right? |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Not sure if this was addressed earlier in the thread, but what about fruit flies?
I gave a scoby w/ directions to my friend, and she said that fruit flies are flying around the bottle it's in. There's a definite gap so no liquid is touching the cloth covering the mouth of the jar, and she's using a rubber band to hold it on. So, don't worry about the fruit flies?? I suggested putting it in a cabinet, since it's out on the counter. I haven't had that problem w/ my kt, so I have no idea.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
:hiss yfit
Mollllllllllllllllllllldddddd! GR. Just went and got some that I bottled to try it. It has a little carbonation, tastes great! WONDERFUL. Then I look at my two big jars to see if I should bottle this weekend and they were covered in mold! So, looks like I'll be having to start over. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
nooooooooo! that is so aggri-nervewracking!
My kids are asking for kombucha like fiends. I need to get a batch going again. I've been so busy I haven't cleaned my jar or brewed more tea. I think they'll be done with the liter I do have done before I can get another batch going... |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I started my last jar about a month ago and forgot to bottle it . The SCOBY looks great, should I just remove most of the vinegar and brew more as usual?
