Default Creating Your Username for the GCM Message Board

Creating Your Username for the GCM Message Board

Choosing a username for a message board can be fun, but also difficult or even frustrating because it can be hard to think of just the "right" name for you (that is not already taken! ). Although an admin can change your username if you end up needing a username change in the future, when registering for an account on GCM we ask that you do your best to carefully choose your username because in an online community of this size other members recognize you by your username--it is your online "face," the first part of you that others see and decide to respond to in threads. It can be confusing to others and disappointing to you if you decide to change your username at a later point when people have a hard time recognizing you by a new username. Please note: Because of this we recommend that you not change your username after you join. However, if you decide to change your username after you join, you may have only one username change. Please choose your username with care.

We hope that the following suggestions will be helpful to you when selecting your username and will help you select a unique and memorable username that you will enjoy for many years to come.

1. Choose an original username that in some way describes you or shares something important about you. Considering things that are special to you such as your hobbies, favorite books or movies, favorite books of the Bible, favorite animals/colors/seasons, etc., would be a good launching point for creating a unique username.

2. For security's sake avoid choosing your actual last name or other highly personal information as part of your username.

3. Take the time to create a username that you feel you will be content with as a good representation of yourself on the boards, one that you feel will be a good fit for you far into the future. If you are planning a large family, for example, "HappyMomOfTwo" might not be the best name choice.

4. Please consider avoiding names beginning with "mom," "mommy," "mama," etc. or that include the word "gentle," as these have become some of the most commonly used words in usernames.

5. If, when registering for an account on GCM, you select a username that is detected as being too similar to one already in use, you will receive a form letter requesting another username submission.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping to make GCM a fun and comprehensible community!
