making pretty backgrounds

I'm creating my own home school planner because I don't like any of the ones I see out there. I'm just kind of bummed that what I have created, while pretty and well laid out, is all black and white. I want some fun colors and back grounds.

Has anyone done anything like this before? Care to point me to a good tutorial?

I've used some gimp before, but I don't know if that would work here? It might be too complicated.

In the end, I'm going to have it bound for me at a big print shop, so I want things to look nice.

You and I are alike in this. I like the well planned day planners. I do digital scrapbooking, so I've played with making planners like that.

I've learned by trial and error. If I come up with a tut, I'll let you know. You've inspired me to post one on my blog when I get it finalized.
