Tile around the tub...
Is there any reason to not put tile around the tub (other than being harder to clean)? We are going to start a monster bathroom remodel, and DH wants me to pick out what to do around the tub. I love subway tile (white w/ gray grout)... but the surrounds are cheaper
Any tips?

Re: Tile around the tub...
I'll tell you from experience... subway tile looks awesome, but unless you go with white grout you'll always feel like your grout is dirty. It drives me nuts!
Are you talking about those tub inserts so they go from tub to ceiling?

Re: Tile around the tub...
We have 1 with white tiles (with white grout) & one surround. The surround is actually harder to clean (we have hard water & it really sticks to it. Its also white, hard to notice).
Also, I think the tiles look nicer over a longer period of time. So while the surround is cheaper up front, I think the tile will end up lasting longer. I think surround is a good quick fix if you plan on selling in the next few years, but Id go with tile if you plan to live there for a long time. Ita with the above poster, Id go white grout with the white tile. Also, bathroom remodel! Fun! |

Re: Tile around the tub...
We have slate tile around our bathtub and I love it BUT make sure you go with a steel tub if you are doing tile. Ours is the fiberglass and fairly cheap fiberglass at that and it moves too much for the tiles so we are going to end up having to tear it out and replace the tub.

Re: Tile around the tub...
Fun?? I'm just hoping to survive it (we only have one BR- otherwise I think I'd be a little less cranky about it... but I've been grumpy-bob, cranky-pants these last few months even w/out a BR remodel!
Thanks for all the advice I love the look of subway tile, so glad to know that it's worth it. I was going to do gray (not too dark) grout, thinking it would hide the dirt better , but I do worry that it will get mold that I can't see. I've seen pics on pinterest of the white w/ white and like it, too ing Good to know the plastic surrounds aren't easier to clean We have hard water, and I'm the world's worst clean-er! I am excited for the end product.. that part seems fun, but I'm a little worried about having a baby and not being done w/ it. At least we can get the tub part done, so I won't have to be w/out a bathtub for too long

Re: Tile around the tub...
We finally have a shower It took a lot longer than I thought it would, but poor dh worked so hard (when he was able... he works a lot). I was on my best behavior and didn't get mad, not once
The curtain for the window and the shower curtain are up (just not in the photo). He will eventually re-do the ceiling, but we are going to tear out some walls first (there is a closet next to it), and eventually put the washer and dryer in there. Sparrow, we went w/ darker grout (I think something that hides dirt will be better for me ). What color should we paint the walls? DH wants to paint them temporarily, since the tearing out walls thing can start from the other side of the bathroom, and it will take a very long time I almost want to do yellow, but our living room is yellow (although eventually it needs to be repainted, too). I also like a steel blue-grey color w/ white beadboard on the bottom of the wall, but it may make it look too dark.

Re: Tile around the tub...
nice.
With that white, you could go with pretty much any colour. I love the idea of a steel blue. Or you could do a muted green. I was looking at those sorts of colours for a bathroom paint job that I want to do... I would think you'd want something that is associated with relaxing.

Re: Tile around the tub...
We have a pretty dark steel-ish blue on the top half of our tiny bathroom walls, and it's not too dark at all. It was actually just a mis-tint at Lowe's so a total impulse buy and I love it so much. You can always just paint one or two walls with a darker accent color and do a lighter shade on the other walls.
