Default What size comes after girl's 16?

What junior size do you go to after girls' 16?

Unfortunately it's never that cut and dry.

We have found that Junior's sizes have such HUGE variance.

My dd is in juniors and has such a wide variance in sizing that fits her.

Also, juniors doesn't necessarily proceed simply from girls.... For example, my older daughter went from size 12 right in to juniors. Whereas my younger daughter is in size 14/16 and no where near ready to go to juniors. Juniors isn't simply bigger than girls -- it's more tailored to a young woman's body whereas girls is tailored (theoretically) to a girls body. Taller is one of the big differences which is what keeps dd2 in girls sizes (she's on the shorter side and most juniors pants are way too long for her still....)...

Justice and some other stores carry sizes 18 and 20 in Girls.

J C Penney's carries extended sizes in girls, too, including plus sizes.

For my older daughters, we went straight to adult clothes. But they also had the curves and the chest to do that. But my next dd isn't the same body type and she isn't proceeding through puberty at the same rate as they did.

You can totally bypass the whole junior thing altogether. The biggest difference between womens and juniors is style and trend rather than size. Juniors clothing tends to be more trendy than women's. I also noticed a much lower standard of quality in juniors clothing.... But the stores really cater the juniors department to the young women so they are drawn there....

I see a lower quality in juniors in the stores I go to as well. Is the first juniors size a 00, then 0,1,2...? I think my dd may move into a combination of juniors and ladies petites since she's still too short for normal ladies sizes and the smallest junior sizes seem very skinny (she currently wears a size 14).

Jr sizes are the odd numbers. Women's go the even. So Jr's are 00, 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13,15...

Womens are 0, 2, 4, 6 and so on...

Because of how they are cut though, a woman who wears a 4 or 6 in women's, might wear a 7-11 in juniors.

Yep, I find even more variance in Jr's size than woman's, it's insane. I won't buy my teen anything without her there and trying on because of that.

Nodding along that juniors clothing is often poorer quality and typically a much more revealing cut/style, whether that be that the skinny jeans are even tighter, the v-necks are even lower, etc. We don't have many options in our small town so that's just been my experience. It might be better at some stores.

Good to know.

In our town we have Walmart, Target, Old Navy, and TJMaxx.

Might have to take her to the next big town , 45 minutes away, to try Justice and JCPenny.

She didn't find anything she liked at our local consignment sale this weekend, there wasn't much size 14 or 16 selection this year. And I can't go to the huge sale next weekend as dd1 has a clogging competition.

I got her 2 tshirts at Walmart last week. She needs more and shorts.

It's not so cut and dry at all. My dd was wearing 0 and 2 when she was still wearing 14 also and then when she wore 16 I think she was still in a 2. Now she's a 4 to 6 and solidly out of girls' sizes. Every body is so different but there is definitely an overlap and as others have said, it has a lot to do with body shape.

I agree you can skip juniors. It's mostly styles that are pretty awful anyway.

It's ridiculously hard to dress that pre-teen/early teen age girl (and boy).
My girls moved from 16 into women's sizes. Pretty much size 2-4/xs/s depending on fit at old navy, but one needs tall length pants, which don't start until size 8. sigh.
They have to try on everything. Which they hate.

If you need shorts, we did find decent jersey ones at Justice in larger sizes (up to 20 was available). My girls have "outgrown" Justice in style, but do still like their basic tanks and jersey shorts. Now it's all about Hot Topic Doctor Who, Old Navy basics, and t-shirts from various sources, and retro style dresses.
