Default How Inuit Parents Teach Kids To Control Their Anger

I thought y'all would enjoy this article as much as I did:

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsan...72XAQxK3DxJkf8

Quote:
Traditional Inuit parenting is incredibly nurturing and tender...

The culture views scolding — or even speaking to children in an angry voice — as inappropriate, says Lisa Ipeelie, a radio producer and mom who grew up with 12 siblings. "When they're little, it doesn't help to raise your voice," she says. "It will just make your own heart rate go up."

Even if the child hits you or bites you, there's no raising your voice?

"No," Ipeelie says with a giggle that seems to emphasize how silly my question is. "With little kids, you often think they're pushing your buttons, but that's not what's going on. They're upset about something, and you have to figure out what it is."

Excellent article. Thank you for sharing it. Where I live, punitive parenting is the norm so it's neat to see a whole people group being raised in a gentle manner. Just think of the long-term impact that has on their adult society.

One of my aunts did this. I remember because my mom is from a family of yelling out of control people. My mom used to always point out, when we visited, how odd it was that my aunt went around whispering, etc etc.

I'd say my aunt's kids had the smoothest childhood and grew easily into mature people compared to us and my other cousins!

I read that article a few days ago. I love how they described their approach of not yeling at a child. As for the part about how they prevent the children from engaging in dangerous behavior such as staying away from the ocean due to the possibility of drowning, I didn't care for that approach too much.

Quote from article:
"Jaw says Inuit parents take a pre-emptive approach and tell kids a special story about what's inside the water. "It's the sea monster," Jaw says, with a giant pouch on its back just for little kids.

"If a child walks too close to the water, the monster will put you in his pouch, drag you down to the ocean and adopt you out to another family," Jaw says.

"Then we don't need to yell at a child," Jaw says, "because she is already getting the message.""

I wasn't sure if the scary stories were told in jest or not. Did you guys feel it was presented as sincere or silly?

Isn't story telling in line with their culture though? I would imagine it is quite something they are used to.

The story telling didn’t bother me. It’s in line with more ancient culture. Folk and fairytales had/have an important cultural purpose.

Yes, absolutely!

I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it because it isn't part of my culture, though.

It sounded sincere to me I think it's definitely part of their culture
