Favorite ancient history books?

Any favorites to go with SOTW?

Especially ancient non-western cultures. But anything really. My kids doing SOTW are 2nd, 5th, and 8th grade.

Story of the Greeks and Story of the Romans have really nice short chapters. They are mostly historical, but include some of the myths and legends as well. SOTW might already cover that material sufficiently.

Novels for the oldest could include Ben Hur or The Robe (by Lloyd Alexander) or The Bronze Bow. Retellings of The Iliad and The Odyssey such as those by Rosemary Sutcliff? Those are all Greek/Roman, though

I have the activity book for SOTW somewhere. I think there are recommendations in it. Or maybe it’s in The Well Trained Mind.

I remember The Bronze Bow being recommended. I’ll see what others are suggested.

Gilgamesh, Beowulf - doesn't hurt to have a nicely illustrated copy

Codes of Hammurabi and Moses

D'Ulaire's Mythology

Rosemary Sutcliffe wrote a trilogy set in Roman Britain; I've only read the first book, The Eagle of the Ninth, but it was excellent. (The movie starring Channing Tatum? Not so much.)

I have that, too. I just want to find out what people's favorites were.

I have the best luck going to the library and looking up city names, people names, historical eras, country names, practices or games, anything I can think of that might be related. Sometimes I don't find much, but sometimes I get surprised. I have a librarian in the kids section who I really like and she enjoys finding good books, I usually ask her if she has any ideas or recommendations. We end up with good history books, informational books, novels, and picture books that are either directly about what we're studying or tangentially related.
