It's not recommended to use flavored starter but I know of people who have.

Glass lid isn't the issue at all. I've done other batches the exact same way and they were perfect. Air can get under it and thru the towel. Obviously since the fruit flies got to it.

The issue was I filled the jar up too much then it bubbled up underneath the scoby pushing it against the towel. Having that right up against the towel and getting the towel wet is what caused the issue.

And it was such a good brew I had going! Great growth with my scoby and beautiful strains hanging from the scoby.

I follow one of the Texas Rangers' fiancées on Twitter (you following me?) and she posted a kombucha bottle and how it was gross. I tweeted back and recommended a different flavor and told her the flavor grows on you the more you drink it.
It felt cooler before I typed it out.

Well, I'm back in the saddle. I haven't brewed in well over a month because we moved. I just started two new batches. Instead of brewing 12 gallons at a time

I am going to do 2 per week.

Ok, all the experts will tell you that you need 3-4 inches of air circulation above each jar to get the best brew, but they say lots of things I don't do!

Nope, it's mold. I did tea for many months with no issues or anything that resembled mold. It's definitely green/black/white mold.

Wonder if MIl will send me another SCOBy?

Maybe I should have bleached out the container I am using?! No idea.

so if its filled to the very top with the scoby submerged, thats no good? i accidentally did too much this time..i was wondering if its not right. its only been brewing a couple days..
