Re: kombucha 101 thread!
dipped ours up last night - JD saw it in the fridge today and immediately asked for a full cup of "kefir".
"Baby, that's Kombucha" "Kombuutscha kehfear?" "No, just Kombucha." "Well, I want it." |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
So the friend I posted about a little while back with the moldy scoby got a different one. She has been drinking the kombucha just fine for a couple weeks now, but she recently noticed a small lump near her labia and went in to have it checked out. Turns out it's a bartholin cyst, made worse by bacterial infection. She has been given antibiotics to clear it up, but if it doesn't, they will have to drain it by inserting a catheter for a few days. (eek!) So she has two questions and wondered if I could ask you guys:
1) Could kombucha be to blame for the bacteria infection (or be making it worse)? 2) The medication prescribed for the bacterial infection came with a sheet of information about it. One of the things it mentions is that it may interact with vaccines that contain live bacteria (like typhoid and BCG). Do you think that since kombucha has bacteria in it, it may interact with the medication? Should I stop drinking kombucha while on the medication?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
the only way I would think kombucha could be involved is if the "mold" had bacteria as well and she got sick from drinking unhealthy ferment. But I don't believe healthy kombucha would cause the problem - it's healthy bacteria, like probiotics.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Ooooh, that's a good point what Crystal said. If it's good KT, it should be fine...and if it's bad, you would know it, right? It would taste awful?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I've never had/seen bad KT, but I have heard that about fermenting your own foods... you will KNOW without a doubt that it's bad if it's bad So if it smells okay/looks okay, it is okay

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
That's what I've heard, too. I KNEW when my WK was bad (I was able to fix the grains though ) and same with my dilly carrots. Sick-o-disgustingness.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Healthy kombucha won't interact with the antibiotics- if anything it's good for her to keep drinking it because the antibiotics are going to throw off her body flora.
I can't know for sure but I'm guessing the pamphlet is talking about waiting to take antibiotics for a specific duration after the live vaccine so it doesn't interfere with the vaccine's affect. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
We were wondering if maybe it was some kind of die off symptom, like the bad bacteria were clearing out but made the cyst in the process. I can't seem to find anything like this happening in relation to drinking kombucha on google either. So strange.
Okay, that makes sense regarding the vaccine info too. I will let her know. Thank you all!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I'm almost back. I started a scoby from a store bottle and brew once, then while pregnant and not going in the basement much...forgot
Well, I have at least 20 generations of mothers I'm brewing again tomorrow. . I feel bad because I'm probably going to have to toss at least half of this scoby (its HUGE!) and I'm so not up for giving it away on Craigslist right now.
