First Things to Set Up in New Home?
What are the essentials to prioritize when moving? Obviously there are the things that you cannot live without, but I'm especially wondering about what things make a home cozy?
Furniture? Painting walls something other than white? Rug on floor? Wall hangings? Cushions? Etc etc etc. If you were moving into a new place, and you wanted to make it cozy and homey right away, but didn't have gobs of money right away (but had set aside a certain amount of money to buy some essentials right away) what would be your priorities to spend the money on... if you were planning on putting things in little by little?

Re: First Things to Set Up in New Home?
I think it depends on your priorities and what actually needs "doing."
If the walls and/or floors need attention, I would do those first, hopefully before you move things in and start to unpack. That's just easier in the grand scheme of the move. After that, I wait until I'm unpacking, and things will "call out" to me that I need.

Re: First Things to Set Up in New Home?
paint is cheap (if you do it yourself-even with buying a few rollers and brushes) and has a very noticeable affect on a room, so i usually start there.

Painting!!! Do it before you move your stuff in. It changes the atmosphere of the house and is a pain to do afterward.

Re: First Things to Set Up in New Home?
It totally depends on so many factors. What you have. What you need. What the house needs.
But assuming you have all the basics to survive, I would definitely agree with the painting. It's SO SO SO much easier to paint before you move. Almost every time I have planned to paint afterwards, I don't. It's one of my top new house rules for myself.

Re: First Things to Set Up in New Home?
painting is good, and easier to do with no furniture in.
Lighting is also important, though probably not the first thing you would think of. Rugs are really good, too, especially on hardwood floors, but even on carpet. I know this isn't what you're asking about I always move my kitchen in the day before moving day. I bring over my kitchen boxes and unpack them all so everything is in place on moving day. It's nice to be able to fix a simple meal or even just get a bowl of cereal.
