Turkey thawing
DH picked up a turkey today. It says Fresh Young Turkey. But it feels quite frozen. I have heard that fresh really just means it's not deep frozen, but it's still frozen. I should put it in my fridge to keep thawing right? Thanksgiving is a week from today so I don't want it in the freezer do I? I have done this before I don't know why I can't remember.

Re: Turkey thawing
I found several links and they all said pretty much the same thing. Store in freezer and then thaw recommended time (24 hours per every 4-5 lbs) in the refrigerator. Thawed turkeys should be stored in the refrigerator no longer than 1-2 days before cooking.

Re: Turkey thawing
It always takes a day or two longer than it should for me. Don't freeze it. And thanks for the reminder!! I need to get my turkeys and start thawing them!

Re: Turkey thawing
I don't know that but if it's too frozen the day prior, brining it for 24-36 hours will fix it. I always brine it anyway, but have had luck with this even when it was still frozen almost solid throughout one day before.

I read that too but I can't even always thaw a frozen chicken in my fridge in 3 days (time for a 14 lb turkey). I wonder if these charts are based on the assumption that your fridge is empty except for the turkey, whereas in reality most of us are thawing in a full fridge which means the food naturally all stays colder. I also saw what it said for fresh but I feel like what they are considering fresh and what this turkey actually is are different. It's definitely frozen, even after being in my fridge all night it's ice hard. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
