Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
Dh bought a used sectional for us. I've been wanting one and I love the color! But it smells, mostly like B.O. and maybe some other stuff- don't know. They didn't have any pets, though. It just feels a little grimy, too. It is dark brown microfiber.
A professional cleaning would be around $200, but we could do it if we need to. Rather not have to. So what works? Unfortunately it is already in our house. It was quite a feat to get it in so I don't want to have to take it out. Also I think it will be nice for our family if we can get it clean.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
You could try spraying with vinegar, then sprinkling baking soda on it and vacuum it up when it dries. I just did this when dd peed on the couch and it worked great. No smell at all. Might be a lot of work for the whole couch though.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
There aren't any stains, so no worries there. Just smell. If I do professional I will go with zerorez. I like that they clean with water and leave no detergents or anything behind.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
I'd still be worried hot steam would set smells. The dryer does?
I'm here because I want to clean our couch too. It's over decade old.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
If the smells are primarily on the surface, sprinkling baking soda and letting it sit overnight and then vacuuming it might work. I would try that before paying the professionals, but if you have to add that into the cost of the couch I bet it was still a great deal!

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
Yeah, it is a huge sectional with an ottoman that was only $280. There are things about it that are in disrepair, but nothing I can't fix to reasonable condition myself. If I have to pay for cleaning we'll still come out around $500, which is a pretty good deal for a sectional. I still have little kids who destroy things as well. We'll pay more for new furniture when we don't have a mortgage and when we don't have little kids. For now I just see it as a big, comfy spot for all of us to hang out and read and talk in the evenings. As long as it serves that purpose and doesn't smell, I am happy.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
Bac-Out! Spray liberally and let dry. Repeat until the smell is gone.
Or rent a Rug Doctor with the upholstery attachment. And I'd fill that with BioKleen carpet cleaner, available at most health food stores. |

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
Yes renting a rug doctor with furniture attachment and going over it with that is what I would do. We own a carpet cleaner and I use the attachment on our furniture all the time- it does the job.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
I actually own a Kirby with a carpet cleaning thing that you fill with water, so I could use that.

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
i like lisa's suggestions too. my mom loves bac out for many of her pet stains
i would start off with what i have on hand, so i would sprinkle it with baking soda (and if you can unzip the cushions sprinkle it in there) and then i would rub the baking soda in then vacuum next morning. otherwise i would steam clean it with my steam cleaner using oxy powder in the water

Re: Advice on getting smell out of a couch?
You can use a bucket off water with your favorite cleaner and a scrub brush. Like scrubbing a floor. Won't clean much under the surface. But, works nicely with microfiber.
