Cork flooring

Anyone have it? There seem to be a lot of good reviews about it, but I don't know anyone who has this on their floor. It will be for kitchen/entry/bathroom/laundry. Dh likes the look of it. I'm not yet convinced that I will like it.

We considered it but the person (who said he was a big DIY guy) at Lowes said it was a bad idea for a kitchen- the water wouldn't be good for it.

because I have a feeling we're going to completely re-do our kitchen in a few years.

I was wondering about water too. Don't know if it would be good for kitchen or bath but might be nice in a hallways and bedrooms.

Damage

As mentioned previously, cork floors will expand if put in contact with water. While this is a serious problem with regards to cleaning a cork floor, it is also a large problem in general, as a small spill can cause a big problem. If you plan on installing cork flooring in a kitchen, bathroom, or other location where water or other liquid spills can be a common problem, you should be aware of this weakness that cork flooring has, because there is a good chance it will be relevant one day.

Hmmm. I read a Martha Stewart project article about 10 years ago where she showed how she put cork floor tiles in her kitchen. She claimed it was quite durable -- she had done it before and would do it again. I hope I'm not mis-remembering! I love the look and have wanted to try cork. I wonder if sealing the tiles is possible - just like you would seal hardwood.

I have had wood floor in two bathrooms for 15 years without any problems. If we don't choose cork, we will continue wood into the kitchen, then transition to tile for the entry/bathroom/laundry. I am leaning in this direction.

One reason the cork is appealing is because it is thinner than hardwood, so I wouldn't need angled transitions from our kitchen to the adjoining rooms (great room and dining room). I have a transition now down to the lino in the kitchen, and it would change to transition down from the kitchen because of the subfloor under the lino.

Home decor shows make it look easy when they rip up the subfloor, but my dh isn't keen to do this. Maybe I can talk him into ripping up the subfloor in the kitchen only, and then we would only need one transition to the side entry where the tile begins.

This sounds like the best solution to me because there are a few areas where the floor needs to be levelled in the kitchen.
