Bread Help?

I make home made rolls sometimes that I really love, but it seems that I screw them up as often as I get them right. It's just a basic yeast roll recipe (I think from the Better Homes cookbook). I think my problem has to do with the yeast since my main issue is sometimes they don't rise. I do everything the same, every time. The only thing I don't do is check the temperature of the butter, etc. that I'm pouring in with the yeast because I don't have a way to do that. Ideas? If checking the temperature would make the difference, what would I need to be able to do that? I'd need something fairly cheap...

What water are you using? It might be that you are using tap water which contains chlorine, which kills yeast. The butter & water/milk you add to the yeast should be warm, like a baby bottle.

If it is too hot to touch, it's too hot for the yeast. HTH

I usually use tap water because it's what I have... Would filtered work? (Our water has waay too much chlorine, so that's probably it. At night, it actually smells like bleach! Eew!)
