low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
Got a great recipe? I want something I can use canned tomatoes (and I'd prefer not to smash whole tomatoes). If you know a good brand that produces a sweeter sauce, that would be great! And I want to try and get away with not adding sugar to it. I'm experimenting tonight with using red wine.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
Back when we still ate spaghetti, I just picked a recipe that sounded good and omitted the sugar. James and I don't like sweet sauces, so it was not an issue. Now I have a child that refuses all things tomato and a husband that refuses all things gluten free.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
I love to make own sauce using tomato puree as a base to which you could add the can of tomatoes if you have that.Sea salt, olive oil, lots of basil which sweetens it,parsley and oregano and some minced garlic and then just simmer. The wwine would make it taste even yummier. I am not a measuring sort of person for something like that.My family doesnt like onons in the sauce but could add minced onions or sautee low heat in olive oil and add rest. You can also brown ground meat if you like and if you eat dairy can add parmesan cheese

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
I used to just add herbs to canned tomato sauce. I can't think of any reason why sugar would be added. That doesn't even sound good.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
I don't care for really sweet sauce so it wouldn't be an issue for just me, but dh likes his a little sweeter. I always use tomato paste, along with canned tomato sauce. (I add fresh tomatoes because I can't buy canned here, but if I could I'd use canned tomatoes too.) The tomato paste gives a richer, sweeter flavor than just sauce. The other thing that makes a difference is long, slow cooking. If you use onions, saute them for a long time over low heat so they get really carmelized, and cook the whole sauce as long as you reasonably can. Second the basil too, lots of dried basil. Also I add just a pinch of fennel - basically this mimics having Italian sausage which we also don't have.
I'm not above adding a pinch of palm sugar sometimes if it just seems too sour though, but definitely taste first.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
We use canned tomato sauce (not spaghetti sauce)- we like Hunts the best. We add Italian seasonings (oregano, basil [don't boil the basil- add it at the very end], thyme leaves, etc.) and a pinch of gumbo file along with a tiny bit of minced bell pepper and some olive oil and cook it until it gets nice and thick. It's my favorite tomato sauce ever- better than any restaurant.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
Almost all canned/jarred sauce has added sugar in it. In fact, I've only found 1 type of sauce that is added sugar free and soy free.

Re: low-sugar homemade spaghetti sauce
Are you talking about plain canned tomato sauce or canned/jarred pasta sauce?
