If you have/hypothetically would transform your garage..
Into a bedroom, would you:
a) remove the garage door and make it a solid front (to match whatever is on the rest of the house) b) put 1 or more windows there c) make it a non-functioning garage door, but leave it to LOOK like a garage d) other ** it faces the front of the house and our driveway obviously pulls right up to that |

Re: If you have/hypothetically would transform your garage..
If I thought I would ever turn it back into a garage, I would just put a temporary wall behind. If I wanted it to be permanent, I would want to put a window or two in and have the siding match the rest of the house.
My cousin did a temporary version and converted the garage into a tv/rec room. There is a false ceiling above and temporary wall put across so the the garage doors can still open. There are a few feet of space so bikes and sports equipment can be stored in the front. Her children are now 19 and 17 so they might only be home for a few more years. Another reason they might have done this is that the daughter needed a grand piano to practice on for her level of playing. They lost their family room area in the house with the grand piano. Another friend did the full conversion in her rancher, and has a rec. room that is away from the rest of the house (perfect for loud teens) and has nice high ceilings because her garage was built at a lower grade than the rest of the house. They also built a detached garage, though.

Re: If you have/hypothetically would transform your garage..
I would definitely leave the garage door and build a wall behind it. Converting garages into bedrooms hugely decreases home value and if you might move some day you'd want it to be easy to convert back!

Re: If you have/hypothetically would transform your garage..
My first thought is wondering what part of the country you live in and whether the existing garage is heated/air conditioned and whether that was a possible continuing existing condition.
Here in Michigan we'd have to add heat to a garage to convert it to a bedroom so it would definitely be a more permanent conversion.

Yes, it would need heat.
If we did this, we wouldn't be changing it back...even as the bigger kids moved out. |

You also might want to check building codes. We wouldn't be allowed to do it where I live (one of the rules is that each house has to have at least a 2-car garage).

Re: If you have/hypothetically would transform your garage..
We are building a house with a garage and the ten year plan (hopefully less) is that after we've gotten a gotten a large shop built for DH we will change the garage into a master suite and give the entire upstairs (4 beds) to the boys.
Here are our rough sketches... lol M - mudroom C - closet B - bath Probably won't do windows since it's just a hallway there... though it would look prettier in the middle of the woods so not concerned about "curb appeal" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
