so, the consensus is that drinking kombucha while pregnant is fine, if you've already been doing it, but, you shouldn't start drinking it while you're pregnant, correct?

Default kombucha 101 thread!

That seems to be the case. It does contain a tiny bit of alcohol, so I wouldn't be drinking a gallon or anything. I drank about 8-16oz, maybe even a little more, of ktea this last pregnancy with DD, until I just didn't want it anymore (I had HG and very little was appetizing).

I am sure it would be fine. I usually start out with about 1/2 cup and then work my way up. I drink it off and on during pregnancy.

In TCM and Ayurvedic thought, it is not compatible with pregnancy. I drank it during my last two pregnancies, though, with absolutely no issue.

Lisa do you know why? My tcm practitioner strongly encouraged me to keep drinking it through pregnancy.

Only what I've read online. I don't remember the specific reasons and it wasn't enough to persuade me. I drank it during pregnancy.

Default Re: kombucha 101 thread!

Here is one knowledgeable kombucha brewer who advises against it during pregnancy, it starts about halfway down.

Quote:
Since the Chinese physicians First Duty is to Do No Harm, then the warning is not to give herbs unless specifically called for. When appropriate TCM herbal remedies, in my opinion, is often superior to their western counterparts.

At this time of development TCM seeks to build and strengthen the mother. Through the mother the fetus is strengthen. The image is one of creation and building. Such as that created by Kefir and Caspian Sea Yogurt or Viili. Good, nourishing wholesome foods. Kombucha Mushroom Tea, on the other hand, breaks stagnation and moves the blood. Kombucha is invigorating. Excellent for those people with a lot of phlegm and stagnation and toxins built up over the years. Not good for pregnancy - which is viewed as a form of stagnation in TCM. One does not want to "purge" a fetus.

Default Re: kombucha 101 thread!

I was reading something about the continuous brew method and it was talking about it being "safer" b/c you don't ever really touch the SCOBY or transfer it to another container. With the batch method, could you just pour most of the completed bucha out, leaving the SCOBY and a cup of the mature liquid, and then add the cooled sweet tea to that? Or is there something about not using the bottom bit of kombucha for your next batch?

(I'm sorry if this has been covered. I really did read through this whole thread a couple of weeks ago but can't remember if this was discussed or not.)

i've actually read that handling the scoby is beneficial. the scoby gets the bacteria that is on your skin (that we all carry naturally on us) and adapts itself to it. so like it can actually sense bad bacteria that is harmful to the scoby and make extra good bacteria to counteract it, and it senses the good bacteria and incorporates that. i will have to see if i can find some links

I basically do that. I pour mine out and leave some brewed tea in, then add cooled sweet tea. When the top of thr jar gets grungy I take it out and separate it off and wash the jar. This is maybe once every 5 brews.

what they wrote. You can handle the SCOBY. I do. You can even let a metal spoon touch it. : giggle

The benefit of continuous brew is that you get a mixture of very strong, normally undrinkable kt and very weak, sweet kt. And most people think it's easier. But you need to spend more money on your set-up. I would love to try it but can't justify the expense.

I was given a SCOBY on Tuesday. He told me to add a bit more water to what he gave me and add some sugar until I was ready to start my brew. Today I finally got around to reading about how to start the brew and followed the method Soliloquy provided on the first page of this thread. I boiled 4 cups of water with 1 cup of sugar and 6 tea bags. Then I added it to my big mason jar after it dropped to room temp and added the SCOBY and filled it with filtered water. Does that sound good?
