Iron supplementation
I take a ton of supplements already. So I'd like to supplement iron on more of an as-needed basis and by that I mean - since women tend to get tapped out because of menstruation, I was thinking I would just supplement during that time. But I got to thinking... Wouldn't the iron be taken from the blood when the uterine lining is being built? I mean, isn't the shedding kind of late in the process? So if I were to take an iron pill a couple days of the month should I take it during my period or more mid month?
Also, since the title of this post is kind of broad, feel free to discuss other iron-related questions/comments. For instance, I'm zinc deficient and taking a lot of zinc, which "crowds out" the other minerals copper and iron. Just an interesting factoid for ya.

Re: Iron supplementation
I wouldn't take iron unless blood tests show that you're low. Iron overload can kill you and while I doubt you'd take enough to do that, too much is bad for you.
If you do need iron, we've tried almost every iron supplement out there (hemolytic anemia)and we have had the best results with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Thorne-Researc.../dp/B00H8ZHVQQ. I was even able to raise my hemoglobin in the third trimester with this. Garden of Life "raw iron" is also good. |

Re: Iron supplementation
That reminds me of two other things. My one year old was just tested for iron and lead (standard check up for his doctor at that age). He is "low in iron" but I hesitate to supplement because iron has its drawbacks (I think I've read that it lowers the immunity?) My kids and I are almost always slightly anemic, which makes me wonder if their standards are a little too high. Any opinions on supplementing?
Two signs of (a true) iron deficiency are cracks in the corners of your mouth and craving chewing ice. ---------- Post added at 02:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:56 PM ---------- OK I just read something interesting. Ferritin (iron) levels rise during infection. So if I brought him in sick, maybe his level would be fine? This was the recommendation I read in an article: "the concurrent measurement of two acute phase response proteins, C-reactive protein (CRP) and α1- acid-glycoprotein (AGP), can be more informative."
