I wouldn't recommend giving a child any medication, hormone, or supplement to help them sleep through the night. If their bodies are designed to sleep through the night, they will, if not, that's the way God made them. I still don't sleep through the night most nights, but cuddles with people I love sure help me fall back asleep faster.

Quote:
In 1989, an outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) occurred among L-tryptophan users [2]. A hitherto rare disorder, EMS is a debilitating disease characterized by severe muscle and joint pain, weakness, swelling of the arms and legs, fever, skin rash, and an increase of eosinophils (certain white blood cells) in the blood. Over the next year, more than 1,500 cases and twenty-eight deaths were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [3]. The actual toll probably was more than 5,000 people, many of whom suffered for years and are still disabled. Some of the victims were children. When the link between EMS and L-tryptophan became apparent, the FDA quickly banned its sale

Headache, excessive sedation, and transient depression have been reported, most often with doses greater than 8 mg/day. Isolated cases of rash, a psychotic episode, gynecomastia, and autoimmune hepatitis have also been reported after melatonin use, but in none of these cases has melatonin been identified as the cause.[1- 3]

In a 1998 study published in Lancet, melatonin administration to six children with underlying seizure disorders produced a worsening of seizures in three.[15]Although this finding has not been reported in other papers, the benefit to risk ratio of melatonin in patients with seizures should be carefully weighed before initiation of therapy. Because melatonin may also play a role in immune function, it is not recommended for patients with autoimmune disorders.[2]

Melatonin in inappropriate doses leads to night terrors and insomnia.
My mother used to give my brother Calcium/Magnesium before bed when he was little and it did help him have a more restful sleep, but didn't ever help him "sleep through the night"

Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turn of the world. Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down. Tells you she's hurting before she keens. Makes her a home.

I will admit that I've been grateful at times when Kevin's been sick (which hasn't been very often) and the medicines hade him drowsy and able to sleep better (and consequently, we slept better). But I wouldn't give him anything, natural or not, just to make him go to sleep...if he's not sleepy, he's not sleepy. Perhaps an earlier wake-up time in the morning or shorter or fewer naps are in order at your DD's age (Kevin started dropping naps at age 2). If there's another issue (fears or something like that), medications won't help -- parenting will.

FYI...just so y'all know...there are studies that suggest melatonin is helpful for BPD. It's usually prescribed by a pyschiatrist.

I agree that it shouldn't be used lightly.
