Default nighttime nose bleeds

DS woke up this morning with dried blood all over his face, and a sleeve of his pjs soaked in blood. Just a little on the bed. This is the 2nd time in a couple weeks. What could be causing it? It's strange, b/c he hasn't woken up either time, so I don't wake up either... which means we find out about it in the morning. I'm a little nervous it's dangerous to sleep through a nose bleed. Does anyone know? Could he choke or drown?

What can I do to help him? No other nose bleeds during the day or dry nose or anything... he is going through a nose picking stage that I can't get him to stop :/, but it's not too excessive.

I used to get them all the time as a kid..and my dd1 gets them occasionally too. I think most likely his nose is just really dry. Try running a humidifier in his room. As for not waking up... he is probably just sleeping really hard... must be nice huh..hehe

Sometimes a sinus infection can also cause that.

Try some saline nose spray. It can keep his nostrils moistened while you work on the picking issue. You could also use a q-tip and coat the insides of the nostrils before bed. It will keep them moist, prevent bleeding and in his sleep will work as a natural deterent for the picking. Most people use vaseline for this but you can use lanolin for a more natural alternative.

Unless he sleeps on his back, its draining out, not in. If you are seeing blood (versus a crusty nose but no other evidence of a bleed), then he's not going to choke on it.

If you get really desperate, I'm told you can pack the nostrils with pork fat, but I've never tried it personally.

Really, I'm not making it up. Hemophiliacs tend to really struggle with nosebleeds, though its apparently more common in Von Willebrand patients. We have both in our house. It is a common suggestion. Its just not one I have ever felt I was desperate enough to try.

Interesting... my brother has hemophilia and I do remember him getting a lot of nose bleeds growing up.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
