Default Zyrtec and Singular

DD primary dr. put her on Zyrtec and Singular for what we think is bronchitis due to allergies. Since she started taking these meds her coughing has stopped but she has been sooooo weepy and whiny. The dr. told me to call and we could switch her to something else if she had behavioral problems but I was trying to wait it out and see if it would somehow correct itself. It hasn't and I'm starting to worry about her. She's only 3 1/2 but she gets upset and tells me she is no ones best friend. She's always needing to hug me when I say something to her that she sees as me getting upset with her. She never used to do that at all. She would just yell at me. Has anyone else had these kind of problems with their children on these meds?

Not with the Zyrtec, which makes me SO SLEEPY But Kendra was supposed to go on Singular, when I looked up the side effects I decided it wasn't worth it. Kendra already has behavioural problems coupled with mood swings. Singular is known to make them worse and cause depression and I believe suicidal feelings (mostly in older kids). I didn't think the potential benefits were worth the risk

Our ped put my ds on both as well when he was just a baby for a cough that wouldn't go away. They didn't work and teh only thing that did was tylanol with codine because then he was too tired to cough. He had teh cough for months,We ended up going to a homeopathic dr who suggested a dairy sensitivity. We stopped dairy with him and the cough stopped. We had him tested for allergies both the blood and skin test and they all came out negative, but the homeopathic dr said he was probably just sensitive enough that when he got sick or a cough his immune system was kind of supressed to it took him much longer ro fight things off. sorry to ramble, but thought I would let you know.

My oldest can't take Zyrtec because she becomes a hormonal mess. We use Claritin for her allergies without those moody side-effects.

My dd was prescribed Zyrtec along with some asthma meds. She is allergic to cats, which triggers the asthma. The Zyrtec made her really out of control. Her behavior around other kids was absolutely horrible- hitting, screaming, temper tantrums, even choking another little girl at church. (and I realize that 3 year olds are a mess anyway, but this was so far beyond normal 3 year old behavior)

We got the cat out of our house, completely cleaned it, and took her off of Zyrtec and her behavior clicked back into normal almost right away. So I'm convinced it was the Zyrtec. The doctor said that Singular was another option, but he said that the side effects with Singular are usually more significant than Zyrtec, so we opted out of both. I do, however, still give her a dose of Zyrtec when we stay with family members who have cats.

If you can't eliminate the allergen, then I would try another med until you can figure out what works.

Thanks for all the input. I've call her dr. but she won't be back in until Monday. Hopefully we will be better next.
