My artichokes are all of a sudden dying. A week or two ago they were big and beautiful plants and now they're starting to shrivel up.

I know nothing about artichokes. Hope you find out what's happening!

Funny story...

Last year I was in a panic about a broccoli plant that suddenly started dying. It looked to me like some disease or fungus or something, so I took a leaf (in a plastic bag) to the local greenhouse for a diagnosis. We tossed around some ideas and got down his big book of diseases (lots of pics) and could not figure out what was going on. Before this, the plant was huge and healthy (he even commented on the size of the leaf and how healthy it looked apart from the damage). I left no further ahead than before. My neighbour came over a couple of days later and I took her to the garden to ask her opinion. The first thing she said was, "Uh oh ... looks like Tucker peed on your broccoli!" Yeah... we didn't eat that one.

It's pouring rain out there right now.

Forecast high of 17˚C (62F) today and low of 4˚C (39) tonight. High winds are back, too. (shakes fist at sky) No gardening happening today... or much at all this week if the extended forecast pans out.

I'm wondering if our cucumber trellis has something to do with their wilting - as in it's blocking some of the sun I might consider transplanting them, but not sure where to

DH finished fixing our fence and the garden area yesterday, so today I'm going out there to plant. I drew a map of where I want everything this year and am feeling fairly accomplished by just doing that, lol.

The rain keeps passing us by, so I've gotten 2.5 beds weeded between yesterday and today so far. I think the seaweed drench is working for the tomatoes; the damaged leaves are gonners, but the new leaves are green. I should do the same drench for the pumpkins on the far south end as they're looking wonky, too. What a weird year. At least I know I'm not alone! I had a few minutes last night to get on GardenWeb and others in Saskatchewan were posting that things are off for them this year, too.

Hellooooooo... anybody out there?

Sped home from picking up DD from Kinder and went straight outside. Got half the pole beans done before it started raining. I'm doing really well so far with the main garden this year; none of the weeds (so far) are making it to an inch tall. I'm determined NOT to let them get out of control this season. Most of our problem in the past has been that our soil is mostly silt and clay, which takes longer to dry after rains (it goes straight from slick to rock-hard crust or clumps). We've been making a concerted effort the last couple of years to add as much compost, garden waste and grass clippings as we can make and it's already making a huge difference in the workability of the soil and with drainage. I've been doing a lot of my weeding with no tools this spring and the tools I am using are changing as the soil changes. It's quite interesting actually.

I'm here....just reading. Something ate all my leaves off all my vineing plants again. GRRRRRR. I realized I didn't plant marigolds in my garden and that's the only thing I've done different so I planted some. So far so good. I'm hoping my plants will come back for second time.

Yesterday, I weeded the raised beds which was easy and then started on the in ground bed. Like I mentioned before, it is awful clay and the grass that grows in it is so hard to pull. I can't get anything to work, not hoe, not shovel, not by hand. I waterd it really, really well the night before and so it softened it up some. Dh went along and tried to loosen up the dirt a little bit with a shovel and then I pulled what I could by hand. I only cleared about a foot width along one of the short ends of the garden.

I ended up planting some canteloupe and I'm trying the kale again since I've already planted it twice and nothing came up either time.

I picked zucchini today and am making zucchini chips in my dehydrator.

Ate some raspberries! I have red and yellow ones ripe right now, black ones are loaded but green still. Strawberries are doing well. Planted a couple plants my friend gave me and freshened up my hanging baskets. Watered and weeded the raised beds and where my irises are.

Dh and girls bought me a giant delphinium for my birthday. It looks quite lovely. I've never grown them before, trying to find the right spot in the yard for it.

Weeded one of the beds tonight. Hoping to hit the other one next week. We aren't quite sure what's plants and what's weeds in that one yet.

Ripped out failed peas. Marked out rows for succession plantings and planted six short rows of bush beans. Plan to get more corn and carrots in this weekend. And I moved some strawberry plants out of the path and into a bed. I'm trying to be patient waiting for my first zucchini to be ready.
