Watered and built pea trellis. My hands are raw from handling the wire and zip ties, but they sure do look good. Not done yet, though... not even close and the peas are taking off so fast now that we finally have some heat!

Pulled weeds...again. My winter squash are starting to grow more quickly. I'm hoping they are about ready to take over the pea area when the peas are done. This is the first I've done winter squash in this garden, hoping for more success than I've had w/ summer squash. More blossoms on my tomatoes. I think this is the first year ever that my tomatoes at home have looked better than the ones at the farm. I don't think the farm ones were watered enough. I think by this time last year I had a full-grown jungle down there, not so much this time.

We picked our second grape tomato--but it was red instead of green, so we could actually eat it.

Fate doesn't want me to have a garden this year. We're under tornado watch again and on the Regina stormchaser dude's radar for the day; the Discovery Channel stormchaser is in Canada for this one, too. The dewpoint is 21 and we're at 28C right now (humidex says it feels like 35). Dry 35 is hot but bearable. I can't handle humidity. It's yucky out there and I've got 50 things to do today, outside and in. We're probably getting hail tonight and the garage is full of shingles, so DH has taken the day off to try and get the yard and especially the garage in order so we can put the car in. #skstorm is the top trending hashtag in Canada right now. I've got a real sinking feeling that the garden is going to be trashed tonight.

ETA: Greg was just on the local news. Kinda neat to see the guy that we've just been listening to online. The city of Prince Albert is still without power from last night's storms and may be for 48 hours or so. He said it's extremely unusual for Environment Canada to issue a tornado watch this early in the day. There are some GCMers down south who may be closer to the worst of it than us, though, so hopefully they're watching and preparing. At least on the wide-open prairies you can see the weather coming.

Well, the first storm (more coming) has gone through. The wind and hail flattened half my tomatoes and all the peas. I'm hoping both are just bent in soggy soil and not broken. I'm pretty sure one of the cauliflowers is broken at the base of the stem. Two of the Brussels sprouts and one of the broccoli are bent at the base; not sure if they're broken. The pumpkins are windblown, but still in one piece, as are (miraculously) the peppers. Still watching radar; DH says it's just gearing up.

The radio station is posting pics on facebook of the flash flooding in town. At least we didn't get that! We just had a brief power outage and the girls were nervous that the satellite wasn't going to recover before Octonauts.

Well, that's all she wrote.

Round two took out our tower that we had the internet dish mounted on - pulled one concrete footing right out of the ground and bent the other legs. Thankfully, at least, it didn't fall into the house. I'm on dial-up right now and it's pretty painful. Likely won't be online again until the dish is back up... somehow.

DH's parents are further south... they lost the roof of their cattle shelter, the brand new one they only put up last spring. MIL said the whole roof flew over the pen where the steers were and landed on the other side. Thankfully, none were hurt and all the cows and calves are out in various pastures.

It was dark when we went out to assess damage here. We've lost quite a few big branches from the biggest trees on our treeline and there are smaller branches all over the yard. Nearly everything in the garden is either flat or shredded; we'll be able to tell damage better in the morning.

I'm just going to sit here and , k.

My cucumbers developed downy mildew almost overnight. Saw a few faded spots one day. Chalked it up to having to use hose water to water the garden. The following day I went out and all of my leaves were dead or dying. It literally happened that fast. I picked every last cucumber and had some on salads and pickled the rest. I have no idea if it will yield any more My collards also aren't doing well. I've pulled up all but about a dozen plants to see if that helps.

I have two zucchini plants that have been attacked by the squash borer moth, but the rest are standing tall and proud. I have been harvesting at least two pounds of pole beans every day for the past few days. I have an abundance of jalapenos and cayennes. My habanero is just starting to produce tiny little peppers and my sweet banana pepper has all sorts of little peppers coming out. My tomatoes are enormous. My romas and cherries are loaded and I have some Better Boys that are huge, but still green. I just go out every day and pull the suckers off of those.

Since it's so hot, my spinach bolted before it could even be harvested, so I'm going to replant at the end of summer for a fall crop.
