Default Coconut oil

Has anyone had experience using coconut oil on a regular basis? I have used it in some of my baking, and have been thinking about taking the plunge and buying a five-gallon bucket so I can use it for all my oil and shortening needs. I was thinking about getting refined oil, since not everyone appreciates the coconut flavor here - does refined have any coconut flavor? Is it usuable for frying, or for recipes that require a vegetable oil? Also, how long does it stay fresh? I don't want to spend that much money, only to have it go rancid halfway through.

I use the refined so that can use it in so many ways still use olive oil for salad dressings but use coconut for browniing chicken or other meats and blended with butter or in baked good and add when cooking rice.

Wonderful! That's what I needed to know. I plan on using olive oil, too. We already use a lot of it.

At the behest of my osteopathic pharmacist I put a teaspoon of it in my coffee whenever I drink coffee. It helps with energy when I do so and does what activia is supposed to without chugging 4 containers of pricey yogurt per day.

I cook with it as well, and it does add a bit of flavor to some things but not so much that I notice it.

It lasts for-ever at room temp. It says to refrigerate after opening but the pharma said not to worry about it so long as I'm keeping the room comfortable temps.

I use cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil in all of our cooking - sauteeing, desserts, baking, etc... I love the Vitacost brand as it's basically Nutive but cheaper .

Thanks! We use it for deoderant, too. It works better than any other over the counter remedy I've tried for excema, too, although I've found it to clog pores pretty badly on my face. (boo!) Do you have a lotion recipe?

I think I could get used to the flavor, but my husband doesn't want to, so I need to respect his wishes, there.

I am a little concerned about the high level of saturated fat, though. I am already a little worried about my husband's heart health, and would never want to do anything to jeopardize that any further. How do you all feel about that issue?

I like it in cooking and such, but to be honest, we use it much more as moisturizer, a natural sunscreen, lip balm and bum cream! (oh and massage oil)

Peace,

Does the refined boast the same health benefits? My husband cannot stand the taste of coconut, so I can't cook with the virgin stuff. It's great as a moisturizer and so forth, but I can't add it to baking or cooking.

I pan-fry veggies in it, but I prefer butter or bacon fat for frying eggs and meat. Spinach tossed with minced garlic, cooked in coconut oil, is especially good.

And I use it in hard lotion bars.
