Default Why can't I keep normal vit D levels?

My vitamin D just won't stay normal. In the two years since finding my severe deficiency, I am still not keeping vit D levels that are high enough. I've done 4 rounds of 50,000 units for 6 weeks and about to go back for my 5th round. In between the high dosing, my matinence has been 5,000 units a day. But for some reason it only works for a while, then I need big supplementation again.

Why is it not working? I had hyper parathyroidism. It had a lot to do with calcium and vit d. Once I got my vit d in good levels my para thyroid goes down to normal. (I also have hypo thyroidism, different gland and different issues though). I see and Endo for this. She doesn't seem to offer any answers.

Any thoughts?

It's because your thyroid is broken. With treatment, you get your numbers in line, but your thyroid cannot regulate vit D.

Very interesting. Almost a year ago I was diagnosed with a big deficiency. I haven't been retested since I started taking D. But I do notice a difference if I miss a few days of it. My thyroid tested just fine at the time. I'm going to read that article and see what I come up with.

Just to be clear- my vit d is because of thyroid NOT parathyroid? I have issues with both glands. Parathyroids only role is to regulate blood calcium.

Every doctor I've been to says my thyroid is normal. I convinced my primary to put me on thyroid meds based on my symptoms not blood work. I'm only on .025g

Quote:
Vitamin D and the thyroid gland can be factors in two specific conditions: Hashimoto's thyroiditis and autoimmune thyroid. Vitamin D helps boost the immune system and can help with autoimmune disorders. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is less commonly caused by hypoparathyroidism, or lower thyroid function. Treatment is thyroid hormone after being tested by a doctor. In hypoparathyroidism, calcium levels decrease and phosphorous levels rise. Vitamin D can be used along with calcium supplements to resolve issues.
That's all I know.

Default Re: Why can't I keep normal vit D levels?

Beth, I am a thyroid patient (Hoshimoto's Disease) and my Vit D levels are way wonky! I can never keep them high enough. This is one reason that Thyroid patients deal with chronic sickness (ie catches everything that comes around). Thyroid causes Adrenal fatigue and that interferes with the Vit D and A absorption, storage and distribution.

If you are on the high end of "normal", then that may not be normal enough for you. Thyroid is not an exact science...it has to be treated individually and tailored to each person. A Dr. should listen to how the patient feels...not what their numbers look like.

bumping this thread for discussion cause i'm having the same issue. i've treated vit. D insufficiency several times, numbers in the low 20's. This time, end of the summer, my numbers are at 13 ...I've NEVER been that low before. I only have half of my thyroid and my TSH is at 1.67 which is great for me....

I had to be on 100,000 IU's a WEEK for over a year before my levels would stay up. Then I was put on 4,000 IU's a DAY going forward. I wasn't being consistent with my dosage and went hyper parathyroid again. Now I'm doing it consistently. My naturopath said there is a rare condition that affects ability to store vitamin D and he figures I must have it.

My parathyroid was never checked but my vitamin d level was 5. I took 150,000 iu a week and felt great but I lost my insurance and can't continue with the testing and treatments. All of my regular thyroid tests have been normal. I spend lots of time outside too but it's like my body just can't hang onto it.

This article has lots of info about gluten and vitamin d, parathyroid, vitamin d relation to calcium and a list of foods that have vitamin d

My endo hasn't done the huge doses with me. He feels that if you do that, it's a little harder to figure out what the correct maintenance dose is. He bumps me up and then we recheck in a couple of months til we get it right.

In general, the rule is that 1000 IU per day will raise your level about 10 on the blood test. But individuals vary. And winter dose may be different from summer dose.

There is also still disagreement on what levels to shoot for. It's still a new area of research.

Not at all--when I was first tested it was 13 I don't know what it was this last time, but she said "still a little low".

and I have autoimmune thyroid (not officially dx as that--I think my endo just calls it sluggish but the symptoms are connected to reactions to foods, etc.), hyperparathyroid, love vitamin D and low calcium, and most recently my natorapath added a support for my hypothalamus.

He explained that the hypothalamus is the taste buds of the brain--it is the area that tastes the blood and tells the brain and the glands what needs to be added or decreased, etc. Certain things can make the "taste" affected so that it isn't reading the blood correctly. Apparently this includes mold reactions, which includes but is not limited to, yeast overgrowth in the body.

Default Re: Why can't I keep normal vit D levels?

thanks for all the input! lots to think about and ask my physician about!

obviously what i've been doing (out in the sun and 1,000 IU/day) isn't enough since i'm at 13 at the end of the summer.

I just went Gluten Free, and am feeling WAY way better. I'm hoping that it will help with the D def. too....we shall see!

I read this tonight and according to it if you have autoimmune thyroid disease, you can never eat gluten again. http://chriskresser.com/the-gluten-thyroid-connection

wow, that's interesting Amy! I'll have to pass that on to some friends.

I don't have autoimmune thyroid issues (i had a nodule on one lobe, thus only have half my thyroid now) but that is really good information, thanks!
