Swiss Chard
On a whim, I bought a bag of frozen swiss chard at the grocery today. Now what do I make with it? I've never eaten it or cooked with it before.

Re: Swiss Chard
Use it like cooked spinach or kale in the recipes

Re: Swiss Chard
Probably not an ideal dish in July :giggle but a *lot* of soup recipes call for chard because it's a firm leafy green with a smoother flavor than kale but doesn't wilt as thoroughly as spinach.
I bet it'd be good sauteed :think |
Re: Swiss Chard
I use it in a chard tart. It's kind of like a quiche.

Re: Swiss Chard
You need to assess the texture before selecting a cooking method. Some frozen greens are more tender and would just need to be kissed with steam. Others are tougher and need to be boiled. I doubt chard could get to the really tough stages kale and spinach can get to.

Re: Swiss Chard
I'm going to try this recipe and use the Swiss chard.

That looks good.

Re: Swiss Chard
Any Italian bean and green soup is perfect with chard - so Radicchio and white beans, minestrone, Tuscan bean, etc. I make soups in the crock pot in summer because it gives off much less heat than the stove. You could toss it into a stir-fry.

Re: Swiss Chard
Hmm, well I'm not sure we liked it that much. It has kind of a strong taste.

Re: Swiss Chard
My two cents are not to try to put it in a smoothie like you can do with spinach. I've tried that with chard, and it did not go well! :lol

Re: Swiss Chard
I wonder if the strong taste is due to it being frozen. I find swiss chard to be fairly mild in taste, but have only eaten fresh. It is much milder than kale or collards.

Re: Swiss Chard
What other greens do you eat? It is much stronger than say lettus or baby spinach but not nearly as strong as most kaile or collared greene.

Re: Swiss Chard
I bet it might be because it is frozen. I haven't tried it fresh, but I might give it a shot if I ever see it in the store. We love kale, but I've never used it frozen, just fresh. And we love spinach and I've used it both fresh and frozen. The frozen chard reminded me of the canned spinach taste which I just can't stand. I'm not a fan of other stronger greens like collard, turnip, mustard, or dandelion.
