Experienced fabric dyers - I need help!!!

I bought 11 yards of a batik fabric from Jo-Ann's yesterday. As I was getting it cut, the woman at the counter told me she had made some things from the same fabric and that the dye ran - a lot. She suggested I set the dye with vinegar and salt. I've only done that once - a long time ago - with tie dye and small items like handkerchiefs and t-shirts. I've got 11 yards of fabric on my hands this time.

Can anybody here walk me through this? I'm a little nervous, because, well I only just vaguely know what I'm doing. This fabric could potentially get a lot of washing and I don't want to turn all the rest of our clothes green! (Every year I make a Hawaiian shirt for DH for Father's Day with matching shirts or sun dresses for the kids. They usually end up wearing their new clothes a lot over the summer and we've been handing things down as well. I'm expecting a baby at the end of May, so I'm trying to get this done before the baby comes.)

Should I try doing this in the bathtub? And how much vinegar and salt to, say a half-full tub? (I have a ton of fine-grain pickling salt. Would that work?) Or is it possible to set this dye in a front-loading washing machine?

What are your plans with the fabric? Fiber content? Color?

Let's see, 100% cotton, hand-dyed batik. It'll be made into Hawaiian-type shirts and sundresses. I'll probably be mixing it with a different solid cotton fabric on at least one item, so I don't want it to bleed.

Thanks for the link!

Hmmm :think According to that info, I may just have to wash this fabric several times before using it. Awesome!
