We don't attack people

So my youngest (5) loves negative attention. If I leave him unsupervised to go to the bathroom or or cut onions or something he will very often start attacking his older brothers for attention (shoving, kicking, pulling hair, whacking them with toys, whatever). I really need:

1. a script or plan so I don't freak out at him because in his own words "shouting and smacking my bottom just makes me worse" - truth little boy, truth

2. preventative ideas

Thanks!

Id avoid giving him attention when he acts out. Have a blanket you hit you sit rule. Stay calm and just calmly say you (hit threw etc) you need to go sit , go to your room etc..
Gently but firmly lead him if needed. No extra lectures no yelling etc.. then turn your attention to the victim focus your attention there.

Is your oldest willing to actively engage him in something fun when your attention has to be directed elsewhere?

:up

Every behavior serves a purpose. You sense the purpose is attention. Actively teaching acceptable ways to get attention is what he needs.

Can you give him an important job while you go do something? Whether it is keeping something of yours safe (Can you hold my book for me while I go to the bathroom?), watching for the mail carrier or garbage truck, trying to find something in a book (I can’t remember where the page with the polar bear is- can you find it?), etc.
