I often suggest that students read their papers aloud to catch problems - or read it to someone else who can stop them when things don't make sense. I came across one last night that I don't think that would have helped. The overall consistency in their work suggested they likely do speak the way they wrote. I recommended the campus writing center instead.
Another irony is that the last two poorly written papers were guys - this is a women's health course - so they are out of their natural element from the start.
