Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Is it black or dark brown? My scoby always has brown trailing things (I think they're strands of yeast)

There are little blackish pieces clinging to the stringy stuff... Almost resembles loose lead tea. ( I used tea bags)

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I had that once, and it was tea...I think one of my bags must have broken open, I had done that once before.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
That scoby looks fine to me, too. Happy brewing!
I spread the kt love to my totally crunchy suspicious sil today. She tasted some at my house a couple weeks ago and after I encouraged her in my very subtle t3 way, she wanted to start doing it herself. So I brought her a jar with a gorgeous scoby. I hope the beauty is not lost on her. Puppet scoby???! Stop playing with your food!!!!!! Simon has been dyyyying for scoby candy but I had to save the baby for my sil. Did you let it dry out first? I definitely would not want a slimy puppet show. |

No, just when I was bottling, I was playing with it. My mother is HUGE.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
So, if you were 2nd fermenting in an old GT Kombucha bottle, how much fresh/frozen fruit would you use per bottle? How much fruit puree?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
for example, in one old KT bottle i will put 2 average size strawberries, or 1ish TBS mashed blueberries.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I think I'll try the strawberry in the next batch. Dh wants his straight-up/unflavored. I did a couple blueberry-ginger. Here's hoping!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Maybe two 1-inch slivers (using a veggie peeler)? It was pretty subtle....I actually think I could taste the berries MORE than the ginger (so not overpowering at all!)
