And some of it is personality, some is schedule, and some is where in a time zone you live. Time zones are massive. Being on the west end of a time zone is hard on those who like light mornings. Being on the east end is hard for people who like light evenings. Winter and lack of sunlight is hard any way you slice it, but it can be better or worse depending on time zone. My friend in eastern Colorado almost in KS is on the same time as Boise, ID, where in summer the sun is still actually out and shining at 9:30 pm in the summer.

I love "fall back" and I hate "spring forward."

I do wish they would just end it, one way or the other.

Yes! It isn't just the switching but the sifted hours it self.

I wanted to burst in to tears when I heard the news that they passed the bill. Trying to start now to work my self up to dealing with 9am sunrise.

On a more pressing note I need a better way to try to block out the sunlight at bedtime but still leave the windows open for a breeze this summer. What we have done the past summers is the curtens are all closed up right while we do bedtime even though it gets hot in the girls room and then as I go to bed when it is actually some what dim i go in and pull open the curtens open for air flow. Then in the morning I have to go in again at before 5am to close the black out curtens so they don't get woken up at first sunrise ( their windows face north but in the summer there is just enough direct sunlight to fall across the heads of the beds and wake them up)

We have sleep masks for summer. It starts getting light around 4 am here. By 4:30 am I don't have to turn a light on in the kitchen.

I have been close to where you live in summer, but further south, and it is crazy how late it is light!

I wonder if I can sell this to my girls. I might could with early bird now, who just in the past few months started putting her self to bed. Wiggle worm still needs cuddles I don't know if we could make a mask work for her or not.

Do you have spacific brands or are they all about the same?

I personally can’t use Face masks cuz my sensory issues (and now I have a nose ring so I wouldn’t try again )

But this is a big issue for 3rd shifters and I’ve heard a lot of discussions . There are special fans to help w this.

There was an interesting article on this yesterday on yahoo that people are in favor of keeping it all year but when they do, people hate the consequences of 8-9 am sunrises.

Yeah, I really don't understand why they're going with "Permanent DST" over "Eliminate DST" because permanent DST is going to make for some looong dark winter mornings at the same time people are trying to get ready for work, waking up their kids, heading out for their commutes, etc. I can easily see public support dropping off in December 2023/January 2024.

Why can't we just be on regular time? I mean, here in Texas, we have daylight until almost 9 in the summer. Is that really necessary?

As much as some people enjoy being outdoors late in the evening, I feel like all the reasons for morning light are more essential to health and wellbeing.

If I understand correctly, For those of us in the north standard time may exacerbate SAD. From what o understand the goal is to improve the amount of daylight in the evenings because it’s when the vast majority of people can get outside.

This would be life changing for our family to get home at 4pm and have aj hour of light. I leave in the dark and get home to dark. (I work 7-3:30pm).

I could be mixing this up but I read a huge reason is
1 stopping the time changes (improve sleep)
2 improving SAD. (Allow more time to enjoy light)

Generally speaking, though, with Seasonal Affective Disorder even when you do light therapy with a light box, the recommendation is to do that therapy first thing in the morning (or as early as you can). Early morning light helps to regulate our overall circadian rhythm, and specifically benefits the depression that comes with lack of daylight.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, speaking just for myself: extended dark mornings would be terrible for how I experience S.A.D.

This is an excellent point. As I’m up earlier than a normal first shift, I’m at higher risk for shift sleep disorder (defined by working earlier than 7am and later than 6pm. Because sometimes I work before 7 and after 6 all in the same day.

I don’t think there will be any perfect answer. either option will be bad for some people. It also depends on where in the time zone you are. Both Far East and far west as well as latitude
