Default Oil Painting!

Anyone else besides me? I am SO excited about oil painting right now. My dear friends' daughter is an amazing artist and just opened a gallery/painting studio in our town. I am taking one of her oil painting classes and it is SO fun!

Well -- I should qualify that. It is the kind of fun that lurks between complete frustration and occasional thrilling moments when you step back from the painting of a stainless steel bowl you're doing and - amazingly - it LOOKS like a stainless steel bowl!

Class time is very absorbing but supportive. There are a couple of mothers of young children who are in the evening class and they love it for the change of pace. Jenn lets them keep their supplies at the studio to make it easier on them (and no worries about kidlets drinking the turpentine.)

I have never had an art class in my adult life and was never previously artsy, but it's amazing (if I say so myself) how far I've come already. And that's true of the other adult beginners as well.

I'd encourage anyone to give this a try. One caveat: gathering together the paint, brushes, etc, is a little expensive at first.

My dh got me supplies for my birthday just before getting pg with my first. My grandfather taught me to paint when I was young. I have painted a few paintings, but nothing since kids. It is such a combination of frustration and fantastic accomplishment!

Sounds like a great class!!

Yeah, my friends in the class who have young children don't paint at home even if they did before they had children. Quite understandable! But in a few years you'll be able to pass it along like your grandfather did with you!

Oh that sounds like so much fun!!! I miss oil painting... I took several studio classes as a part of my Art Ed degree, and really really enjoyed it! There's something so special about the medium and the way it glistens on the canvas. I'm such a painting dork now that I go to museums now and get up *really* close to the paintings so I can see the brush strokes and how the artist applied the paint.

I haven't been able to paint for the past 4 years from being pregnant, BFing and then pregnant again and I really miss it. Acrylic just isn't the same.

Yes! That has really surprised me about oil painting. The colors and how rich and lustrous they look on the canvas. I have bought a couple of my teacher's paintings and I never stop marvelling at how they seem to glow from within.

Call me old fashioned, but oil paintings really bring out something extra in me, alongside pencil drawings.
