Thoughts on Speed Reading Course
What are your thoughts on Speed Reading? My kiddo can take a course. We've done Charlotte Mason narration which seems to be the opposite of speed reading to me. I'm savoring books now instead of devouring them.
Will this course help college for my kid that doesn't read for fun so isn't savoring books anyway?

Re: Thoughts on Speed Reading Course
Speed reading is a skill that if learned isn't often used all the time in reading. Once learned it has a place in the person's reading life and it's not always going to take precedence. But it might give the student a tool to use to help him get through books that he's really struggling with so that he can study and get through college. Part of speed reading is the requirement to actually comprehend the subject matter and be able to intelligently discuss it immediately after.
I've never done it myself but I do believe that if you have the opportunity and the interest that is a skill worth at least attempting to acquire. Sent from my Moto Z (2) using Tapatalk

I'm going to email the teacher. She said it's a college-level course in her description, but she also said it doesn't have much homework!

Re: Thoughts on Speed Reading Course
I find the concept interesting but i admit I'm really skeptical that I could actually understand complicated material that way.

My kid prefers audio books. She can't take notes in class because then she can't listen and learn (her words.) I can't learn unless I'm taking notes.

Re: Thoughts on Speed Reading Course
I can speed read. I’m pretty sure my parents used Evelyn Wood model.
I rarely use it but can if I want but sometimes do it Accidentally. Personally I do better w fluff on speed reading than heavy material and now typically DO NOT choose to speed read unless I’m in a really hyper mood and catch myself speed reading if that makes sense. However it was the opposite of what my parents intended as they hoped it would Also help me w college. That said I have adhd and was already a reader w a huge capacity for comprehension. What it didn’t teach me was how to slow down and study difficult materials therefore I flunked out of college I’m not sure if it was my brain or the concept but I don’t believe it worked FOR ME the way intended. DISCLAIMER— Now after that as an adult — I’ve also had TBIs I have developed retention problems and have to read things twice. For many years after my biggest TBI I couldn’t read print at all anymore (which was devastating). I fell asleep reading a non fiction last night and have to scroll back in my kindle cuz I’m lost in the book. Because I didn’t know how to Study in high school Cuz everything was easy, I taught my kids how to study vs speed reading. But I do believe speed reading can be a useful tool for people... just not everyone ... maybe those Whose brains may work differently than mine? ETA— what did work was the “speed math” based on chisanbop. I did teach my kids that. And still actively use it ---------- Post added at 02:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:36 PM ---------- Wiki chisanbop https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chisanbop
