Do you know if they managed to stay open though Covid?

Today was my second week as part of the food gleening. That is also another way that I am reducing waist. To day we picked up over a thousand pounds of food from one groshry store that they would have other wise thrown in the trash.

Yes they’ve stayed open. And I’m not surprised .... Milwaukee is actually a really crunchy hip place ... those of us that live near here tend to make it sound ... not so cool but there’s a huge influx of green crunchy businesses

Maybe it was just a washing ton state thing. All the bulk areas atthe stores I go to ah e been completely closed. I haven't gone to the one bigger store that has more because I don't know the layout well at all and so always spent more than an hour there while trying get groshries which isn't very Covid friendly.

One thing I thought I'd mention-- I don't know if the big chains do this but every local health food store I've been to sells shampoo, conditioner, and liquid dish soap in bulk. You have your bottle weighed at the cashier, fill it, then pay.

We buy shampoo in gallon bottles and refill our smaller bottles ourselves, now. But when we had a smaller household we refilled at the store.

This summer I may try making my own shampoo bars. Mommypotamus has the recipe I want to use. It looks really similar to the shampoo bar I tried from Acure which lasted a really long time (it is not safe for colored hair, though). Conditioner bars are to expensive for me to use although I really love them. Halfway through they crumble and they're $10. But maybe I'll find a recipe to try.

Mightynest.com has a monthly subscription that I think is not worth it for going greener. But they have an introductory offer members can share with others which sometimes offers a choice of free Stasher bag, dryer balls or one other thing. I am not a member anymore, just did it a few times to get things I knew I wanted. But maybe you can ask on social media if any friends have offers to extend. The intro offer is free usually, sometimes $3 I think.

Costco carries the Pyrex square and round glass containers that have locking lids. They get marked down a few times a year. The squared set has a small rectangle that nicely fits a Kerrygold butter brick, btw. I was thrilled to figure that out
I have a MightyNest subscription. I've enjoyed getting something for me over the years, since I don't do makeup or other things so Ipsy & the like are out for me. I'd be happy to send referral links.

I also subscribe to Grove Pantry. They are all about sustainable and recycle and reducing plastic. I can refer here too.

We use 31 bags for Costco trips instead of boxes.
Dryer balls
Stasher bags (Honestly, I'm in a phase of make it easy, so washing bags is not high on my list. I got some on clearance at our local pharmacy.
reusable straws - plastic and silicone both are way better than glass
Mason jars for everything!
I have the glass snap-loc from Costco and love them.
Stainless steel containers I got from Mighty Nest are some of our favorites. I've seen them in the local grocery store as well. U-Konserve I think is the brand.
Cotton wash clothes for cleaning up in the kitchen and a different color for bathrooms.

There's probably more, but I need to run.

I'd be interested in a recipe for shampoo and conditioner bars if you find a good one!

Glass and metal straws scare me...I'll never forget reading bout the lady that tripped with a metal one. I don't know how to add spoilers on my phone so I'll leave it at that. I'd be interested in trying silicone or another soft material.

Same.

This is the shampoo bar I plan to make.

https://mommypotamus.com/shampoo-bar-recipe/

It looks identical to Acure which is about $9/bar and lasts a really long time. It took me awhile to figure out how to get good results with it. It's a bit harder to get the lather worked into my scalp compared to liquid shampoo. But I really liked it the longer I used it.

Once your hair/scalp adjust to it, you either use just a tiny amount or don't use daily. It does leave a film of sorts on your hair but it doesn't weigh my hair down. It's kind of like getting a bit of styling product for the same amount of work as a shampoo.

We tried silicone straws. I have a couple of kids who chew on things and were able to destroy them pretty quickly.

My dh loves our Silipints (silicone cups). They have been pretty indestructible, don't hold flavors, and the new-style lids are great for containing spills. I don't much care for the silicone wine glasses he bought me, but the kids like them.

I cannot believe I haven't mentioned Face Silks. https://facesilk.com/products/face-s...inal-pack-of-4

I absolutely love them.

They were designed to replace disposable make-up remover wipes, which I have never used. But I do hate removing eye make-up so I tried them. They're fantastic. I use them even when I'm not wearing make-up. I am able to really clean and gently exfoliate my face with nothing but water. Make-up, even waterproof make-up, comes off with only water.

I wash my Face Silks with a touch of hand soap and scrub with my fingernails, then hang up to dry in my bathroom. Once in awhile I toss them in the laundry.

Have laundry balls been mentioned? I've been using them for almost 5 years. A set lasts for about 1,000 loads of laundry. No need to use detergent. If you still want to use detergent, you use only 1/4 of the usual amount.

Laundry balls don't replace stain remover or a whitener like OxiClean but, in my experience, I don't miss detergent at all.

Yes but a new link? The kind we were using got stinky in spite of exactly following the manufacturers directions. Not sure we’d try again as it took so many washings to get the funk out of clothes when it happened. We didn’t realize so I did several large loads before I realized it

Those are neat make up remover silks.
