Here's a free tute/pattern for making a little kid's lapped tee. Adorable and you totally don't need the serger to make it. In fact I'm super lazy and refuse to keep anything but light grey in the serger (which goes with everything ) so I'd just use a decorative stitch in the sewing machine that had one part on the ribbing and the other part catching the t-shirt fabric.
