Default typing with no capital letters?

Can someone please explain this to me? I think it's a "Gen Z" thing????

They type texts and emails and don't use capital letters. Is this a "cool kid" thing? And does it have anything to do with the slang "no cap?"

Signed,
A confused Gen Xer

I don't know, but my teenage boy doesn’t punctuate, either. I have tried to explain why commas are important, (Let's eat grandma! Vs. "Let's eat, Grandma!") but he doesn't think it matters.

Constant autocorrect doesn't help! I had to go back and change several words in my post just now, and there are probably some I missed.

I wonder if I found out about GCM because of xanga. I had a xanga blog too. Met friends online there I later met in person.

I don’t get the no caps thing either.

It's viewed as more friendly and approachable.
Some people will turn off auto-capitalization, others will go with whatever the default setting is (so you can tell if they're on their phone or computer by whether their message has capitals).

Cap/no cap has to do with lying. (cap is lying; no cap is telling the truth)

The young'uns view punctuation as harsh. And no capitalization unless needed for emphasis.

My daughter and my students have learned to put up with my punctuating, capitalizing ways.

I always assumed it was for speed typing or one-handed typing.

My fifteen year old who is a very capable writer, tells me “no one” uses punctuation in texts.

Drives me crazy.

Yep. This is definitely their slang, too. I'm an elder Millennial (turn 38 in November, God willing), and no one my age ever used that slang. I learned it from them in Discord video game chats last year. Never ever saw or heard of it until then.

I'm just glad this new generation is getting attention now. Millennials are no longer all that young anymore, and it's time for another generation to get their turn, lol.

Silent 1928-45
Boomers 1946-64
X 1965-1980 (DH is one of these, born 1977)
Millennials 1981-1996
Z 1997-2012
Alpha 2013-present

I don't think most Americans know what the generational breakdowns are, so I always keep that reference handy. I think most just view Boomers as anyone older than 40 and Millennials as anyone under that. But there are six living generations (technically seven, but most of the Greatest Generation are deceased now).

This is just for texting. I guess for some kids
Mine use punctuation.
I don't, especially at work when I have to sometimes get a text out and support in quickly.

I'm 36 and I don't use capital letters for casual things, using them (using proper sentences) is more formal. Depends on the setting, really. And yeah, punctuation is optional and can add meaning. I keep having to remind myself for instance that when my mom ends a text with "..." she isn't being passive aggressive.

Things like this is why I do my best to not message people. I am going to do my to tell my student to do not messages at all and just talk me in class. I don't want to deal with trying to go though the code of what they means when there aren't proper sentences with capitals and punctuation and apparently they will think I am mean and aggressive if I clearly ander back.

Things like this is why I do my absolutely best to not talk or communicate at all with most of the world, I will do it wrong and get in trouble. It is better it is better to not say anything ever.
