samplers

does anyone do traditional sewing like embroidery? making samplers and such? i've done cross stitch, and i'd like to try my hand at other things, but i'm not sure where to start and what i'd actually do with all the things i make.

If you search through my past posts in Hobbies, you can see some I did wayyyy back in the day :giggle

I haven't done embroidery for a very long time, not often since I've had my son, actually, since I just haven't needed what is created by it. I have what I'd like for home decor, and I've changed to copious amounts of knitting, instead.

But I did enjoy exploring different types of embroidery - Hardanger and Bargello being two favourites!

Here are a couple of threads:

thank you! did you use linen? i've only used aida for cross stitch and i'm nervous about using something else.

My favourite is Jobelan - it comes in the tinier counts I enjoyed working on, but it's an evenweave. Linen isn't even, and that drove me nuts :giggle

Re: samplers

Have you looked at the sampler patterns on etsy? There are several that I would love to finish and hang in my house.

I do! Most of the ones I've done are either from The Frosted Pumpkins (cross-stitch) or Dropcloth Samplers (embroidery.) I love everything I've bought from both of them. :heart

For anyone just starting out with embroidery, Rebecca (who makes Dropcloth Samplers) also has a creativebug class that walks you through all of the stitches in her original sampler. My daughter and I went through it when she was first starting and really enjoyed it.

I used to cross stitch. My mom used to embroidery. She would do it on all sorts of things. I still have a denim shirt she did from when I was a child. I will take a pic for you.

Ok, my phone charged. Here is the shirt that my mom embroidered for me when I was a child. It is on a hanger that she crocheted around too.

Yep, all of the above. :) They also work well as a center of a quilt.

Edges of pillowcases are fun (you can do them for your kids in whatever they are into at the time). I also like doing Christmas ornaments. They are small so they are finished quickly (plus who doesn't need more unbreakable ornaments?)
